The Tajikistan Elite National Championships started with the participation of 175 boxers

The Tajikistan Elite National Championships is underway in their capital city in Dushanbe where five sessions will be held during the event.

Altogether 175 boxers are attending in the Tajikistan Elite National Championships which is their next selection competition for the upcoming 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. Two of the Tajiks, such as Mizhgona Samadova and Davlat Boltayev have already qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games through the Asian Games.

The number of the women boxers is 57 in the National Championships which is a record in the history of the competition. All of the twelve female categories from the minimumweight (48kg), up to the heavyweight (+81kg) are in actions in the national event.

Among the male boxers, the welterweight (67kg) is the busiest in the Tajikistan Elite National Championships with 13 boxers on the board. The men’s bantamweight (54kg), the featherweight (57kg), the light welterweight (63.5kg), the light middleweight (71kg) and the super heavyweight (+92kg) are also popular categories in this national event.

The ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships silver medallist Sumaiya Kosimova returned to the competitions and she is the main favourite at the women’s minimumweight (48kg). The 23-year-old boxer progressed in the previous events and she will meet Khatlon region’s Zarina Jalilova as next in the Nationals.

Dushanbe’s experienced national team member, Rukhafzo Khaknazarova will be boxing for the title contest of the women’s light flyweight (50kg) with Maftuna Zulfaliyeva in the next session. Fotima Kholova and Fayzimad Surayyoi are the further semi-finalists in this Olympic weight class. Another exciting female contest will be held between Mekhrinoz Muzaffarzoda and Gularus Shoyeva at the light heavyweight (81kg).

Thirty-two contests were held in the first competition day and further thirty-five in the second day of boxing in the Nationals. The main favourites at the men’s flyweight (51kg) as Dushanbe’s Mekhron Shafiyev and Mekhrob Khomidov are both in the quarter-finals in the national event.

Meroj Zoidov is a 19-year-old talent in Tajikistan who competed successfully at the recent Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships as well. The teenager will now meet for the guaranteed medal Samandar Makhkamov at the bantamweight (54kg) while his main rivals as Muhammadali Khasanov, Izatullo Aliyev and Fayzmamad Malakhbekov are also in the quarter-finals.
