Nepal and Sri Lanka were excellent in the semi-finals at the Penang Pesta International Tournament

The exciting semi-finals were on the program at the Penang Pesta International Tournament opened in Malaysia. Nepal, Sri Lanka and Indonesia also impressed in the semi-finals next to the host nation’s team.

The island of Penang is one of the boxing capitals in Malaysia, the small region delivered several national team members, regional champions and future hopes for the Southeast Asian country.

Seven women boxers are on the board of the Penang Pesta International Tournament for the very first time in the event’s history. The number of the male boxers is 65 and they can compete in 11 different weight categories in the picturesque island of Penang.

Muhammad Mukhriz Khan is a local boxer from Penang at the men’s minimumweight (48kg) who advanced to the finals following his next success in the semi-finals. He defeated Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Yan Wei unanimously and he will now face for the gold medal Indonesia’s Marcelo Surati who dominated his semi-final.

Prabal Uprety travelled a lot to compete in Penang but the Nepali boxer looked fresh in the semi-finals of the men’s flyweight (51kg) in the fourth session. He defeated Malaysia’s Hasan Bin Azan unanimously and will be meeting for the title of the category, Sri Lanka’s young talent, Umayanga Pasidu Mihiran.

Nepal’s next boxer in the semi-finals was Chhiring Wangdi Sherpa, a teenage talent, who competed already in two ASBC Asian Boxing Championships as a schoolboy and as a youth boxer. Wangdi Sherpa had the advantage on the judges’ scorecards after two rounds but his shots were decisive in the third against Singapore’s Abdul Wafi Bin Idris.

Sri Lanka’s Heshan Jayasinghe performed well in the semi-finals of the men’s light welterweight (63.5kg) during against Singapore’s Lum Zhi Xiang and his great finished guaranteed his place in the finals. The Sri Lankan will be boxing for the title with Indonesia’s Gianluigi Kalaipupin who eliminated Malaysia’s Perak-based Mohammad Fareezad Bin Mohammad Tamisi.

The men’s heavyweight (92kg) is a very unique category at the Penang Pesta International Tournament where a local boxer impressed in the day of the semi-finals. Danaraj Anantha Selvam controlled all of the three rounds against his Malaysian opponent, Nur Ikmal Ramadan Bin Sakila from Terengganu. The Penang-based boxer will now meet for the title against Sharvin Varmaraj who had a tough triumph in the semi-finals.
