SEA Games silver medallist veteran Nguyen Van Hai defeated his rival in the quarter-finals at the Vietnam Elite National Championships

Vietnam Boxing Federation is hosting their Elite National Championships began in Bac Ninh province and the third competition day has also done in the event. Eighteen contests were in the program of Day3 when Southeast Asian Games silver medallist veteran Nguyen Van Hai won his contest by unanimous decision.

Vietnam Boxing Federation hosted their National Cup for the elite boxers earlier and the country continues its activities for them. Women or men boxers who were born between 1980 and 2001 are eligible to attend in the National Championships. The President of the Vietnam Boxing Federation Mr. Tran Minh Tien opened the Elite National Boxing Championships where all of the provinces can attend throughout the country.

The competition is also a selection for the elite boxers before the World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which will be held on June 2021. Vietnam achieved its first male quota place in the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event where Nguyen Van Duong achieved bronze medal and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. Vietnam’s best boxer ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Nguyen Thi Tam did not qualify for the Games yet.

Altogether 62 female and 88 male boxers are attending for the medals in the Vietnam Elite National Championships in Bac Ninh province. The most popular category among the girls is the lightweight (60kg) with the participation of 10 boxers. Among the men boxers surprisingly the super heavyweight (+91kg) is the most crowded with 12 entries after the general weigh-in.

Vo Thi Kim Anh has got six years of experiences in the national events but she had to do her very best to beat Do Thi Trang in the opening bout of the third competition day. In the second contest at the women’s bantamweight (54kg) 20-year-old Nguyen Thanh Thanh Thom defeated Ho Chi Minh City’s Le Thi Hong Dao in Bac Ninh Province.

National Championships bronze medallist Dao Thi Hue dominated her quarter-final against Bui Thi Thao in the quarter-finals of the women’s lightweight (60kg). She will be meeting in the semi-finals with Ha Thu Hong who bowed out Luong Thi Ngoan in another strong female contest of the National Championships.

Two-time Southeast Asian Games silver medallist Nguyen Van Hai is a veteran boxer who moved up to the welterweight (69kg) this year and arrived to Bac Ninh as the main favourite of the category. He competed in the international stage already in 2008 and those experiences paid off in his quarter-final contest against Luong Ngoc Hanh and secured his place in the semi-finals of the National Championships. Four strong contests have been held at the men’s middleweight (75kg) in the third competition day at the Vietnam National Championships. Nguyen Thanh Giang had a difficult bout against Nguyen Ngoc Hai in the quarter-finals but he managed to win that tactical challenge. Bui Phuoc Tung controlled his contest against Tran Thanh Vy and will be facing in the last four with Nguyen Ngoc Hai.
