ASBC Asian Boxing Championships competitor Nguyen Van Gioi boxed smartly in the Vietnamese Elite National Championships on Day4

Vietnam Boxing Federation’s Elite National Championships saw 17 contests in Bac Ninh province during the fourth competition day when only the men boxers were in action. Nguyen Van Gioi represented Vietnam at the Bangkok 2019 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships therefore he was too experienced for his rival on Day4.

Vietnam Boxing Federation hosted their National Cup for the elite boxers earlier and the country continues its activities for them. Women or men boxers who were born between 1980 and 2001 are eligible to attend in the National Championships. The President of the Vietnam Boxing Federation Mr. Tran Minh Tien opened the Elite National Boxing Championships where all of the provinces can attend throughout the country.

The competition is also a selection for the elite boxers before the World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which will be held on June 2021. Vietnam achieved its first male quota place in the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event where Nguyen Van Duong achieved bronze medal and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. Vietnam’s best boxer ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Nguyen Thi Tam did not qualify for the Games yet.

Altogether 62 female and 88 male boxers are attending for the medals in the Vietnam Elite National Championships in Bac Ninh province. The most popular category among the girls is the lightweight (60kg) with the participation of 10 boxers. Among the men boxers surprisingly the super heavyweight (+91kg) is the most crowded with 12 entries after the general weigh-in.

Vietnam’s Tokyo Olympian quota holder Nguyen Van Duong won his first preliminary contest by large margin of differences and he walked over to the semi-finals of the bantamweight (56kg) following his opponent, Dang Tan Doan was unable to box against him on Day4. Nguyen Van Duong’s next challenge is scheduled against Doan Doi Nho who had a close success over Pham Ngoc Duc.

The favourite of the lightweight (60kg), ASBC Asian Boxing Championships competitor Nguyen Van Gioi impressed in the fourth day of boxing when he met in the quarter-finals with Nguyen Phi Thoan. He shocked his opponent already in the first round and won two of the rounds by 10:8 which showed his impressive superiority. His semi-final rival will be Do Van Tuan who trains and lives in Hanoi and also secured his place in the last four.

Ho Chi Minh City’s Nguyen Van Chung had strong experiences from the previous national events and he also competed out of Vietnam. The light welterweight (64kg) boxer knocked down Hanoi’s Ngo Van Hung in the first round and the referee stopped their contest quickly to save his rival’s health. Nguyen Van Chung will be facing for the title bout with Pham Van Luong in the semi-final of the category. Nguyen Van Diep was named as one of the gold medal contenders at the super heavyweight (+91kg) who impressed in the quarter-finals of the category on Day4. He did not give any chance to Chu Dinh Khanh who was brave in the contest but his technical skills were not enough to reach his rival. Nguyen Van Diep will be boxing in the next stage with Ho Chi Minh City’s Nguyen Tung Anh.
