Royal Princes followed the Brunei National Boxing Tournament which was their first event during the Covid-19

The Brunei Boxing Association together with the Jab Boxing Gym arranged their first national competition since the Covid-19 pandemic. The Jab Boxing Gym’s founder His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen invited His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik to follow the event as special guest.

The Minister of the Brunei Culture, Youth and Sports also attended in the final of the National Boxing Tournament. The event was supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the Brunei Youth Centre.

The country’s best boxers returned to the boxing ring and all of them showed fantastic spirit and competitiveness in Bandar Seri Begawan. Their new competition was a three-day long national event starting with novice contests before the main part of the Brunei National Boxing Tournament.

The Brunei Ministry of Health determined the Covid-19 protocols and the event was held with those safety measures. Altogether 100 boxers attended in the Brunei Boxing Tournament and the event was live streamed through the YouTube channel. The fans, friends and families could follow all of the actions through the streaming.

The Brunei Boxing Association returned to the Asian map in 2017 and hosted its first international event in 2019 which was a great success and achievement of the country. Brunei Boxing Association arranged two Interclub Tournaments for the local boxer in 2019 and after these events, boxing has done a great comeback in the recent days.

Altogether 50 contests have been held in four sessions and various exhibition contests were on the schedule from the flyweight (52kg) up to the super heavyweight (+91kg). The main event of the Brunei National Boxing Tournament contained six contests in the day of the finals, among them two bouts were held in the novice category.

Ak Mohamed Maqawi Bin PG Duraman and Jee Sing Haw won the novice bouts of the main event. The winner of the 2019 Interclub Tournaments Mohammad Ariff Bin Awang Razali, Mohammed Yazid Bin Mohammad Taib, Kevin Lim Chee Chong and Lex Igwe won the elite contests of the main event.

The region’s most important multisport event the next edition of the Southeast Asian Games is scheduled to be held in Vietnam this November & December and Brunei hopes to make a return in boxing. The Brunei Boxing Association is also planning to make a comeback to the ASBC Asian Championships still in 2021.
