Nguyen Thi Tam and the strongest girls defended their thrones in the Vietnam Women’s Elite National Championships

The Vietnam National Championships for their elite women boxers finished in the city of Bac Ninh where 13 champions celebrated their titles. The Vietnam Women’s Elite National Championships was an important selection event for them before the SEA Games and nine of the boxers could defend their thrones. ASBC Asian Women’s Champion and Tokyo Olympian Nguyen Thi Tam was one of the winners in the national event.

Vietnam is planning to send a team to the upcoming AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships which moved from December 2021 to next year. Their women’s boxers are among the bests in the Asian continent, Nguyen Thi Tam claimed gold medal at the Ho Chi Minh City 2017 ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships. Vietnam also earned one bronze medal at the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.

Vietnam qualified two boxers to the Tokyo Olympic Games which was their first participation in the event since the qualification process has been introduced before the Barcelona edition 29 years ago. Their next big step guaranteed strong development in the country which could host national events during the pandemic period.

Vietnam’s capital city, Hanoi will be the host of the next 31st Southeast Asian Games which is the most important multisport event in the region. Boxing is one of the popular sports in the Southeast Asian Games and Vietnam has got the potential to win titles in the regional multisport event on home soil.

The number of the elite female boxers was 61 in the National Championships following the qualifying events of the regions. The first title was achieved by Nguyen Thi Thu Hao at the pinweight (45kg) which is an additional category but the veteran boxer proved amazing performance and defeated Hanoi’s Vuong Thi Huong.

Trinh Thi Diem Kieu of Quan Doi returned to the world of boxing after a short break and defeated her younger rivals in the National Championships. Hanoi’s 20-year-old Le Thi Oanh is one of the new generation members who earned her first big title in the competition following her success over Nguyen Thi Kim Tam.

Nguyen Thi Tam earned several international medals and she is the nation’s top female boxer who dominated her contests in the national event. The 27-year-old Olympian boxer was too smart for Ho Chi Minh City’s teenager Nguyen Thanh Thi in the final. Vo Thi Kim Anh arrived to the event as also a titleholder and she managed to defend her throne after beating Do Thi Trang in the final of the bantamweight (54kg).

Vuong Thi Vy amazed in the 2011 AIBA Women’s Junior World Boxing Championships where she earned a historical gold medal for Vietnam. The currently 26-year-old boxer returned to the world of boxing and defeated Quach Thi Phan of Can Tho in the final of the featherweight (57kg). A younger boxer, Dao Thi Hue earned the gold medal at the lightweight (60kg) following her success over Nguyen Thi Dung.

Thanh Hoa’s Tran Thi Linh has got five years of international experiences and she was confident against Luong Thi Ngoan of An Giang in the final of the light welterweight (63kg). Hanoi’s Nguyen Thi Thu Hang became the youngest winner of the Women’s Elite National Championships, the 19-year-old boxer defeated Hai Phong’s Tran Ngoc Anh in the final of the strong welterweight (66kg). Hoang Ngoc Mai was member of their youth national team previously and the 21-year-old talent proved strong development in the competition.

As many of the ladies, Tran Thi Oanh Nhi defended her throne in the national event, she has done enough to beat the experienced rivals at the middleweight (75kg). Hanoi’s Nguyen Thi Huong is Vietnam’s next top international level boxer who stopped Vu Thi Hue in the final of the light heavyweight (81kg). The heavyweight (+81kg) is also a strong category in Vietnam which was won by the 26-year-old Nguyen Thi Phuong Hoai following her success over Luu Diem Quynh who also has got international experiences.
