Nepali National Selection Tournament was held for the South Asian Games
The Nepali National Selection Tournament was held in the Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu where the boxers of the women and men competition fought for the place in the national squad. The winners of the Nepali National Selection Tournament can box in the upcoming South Asian Games in India next February.
Minu Gurung eliminated Mala Rai and Diwana Sherma in the Women’s Flyweight class (51 kg) where she won the gold medal. Saraswati Rana is one of the most experienced woman boxer in Nepal who attended in the Incheon 2014 Asian Games and also in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Jeju therefore he title at the Lightweight class (60 kg) was not a surprise. The third gold medal in the women competition was won by Sangita Sunar who defeated Pramila Pandey in the final of the Middleweight class (75 kg).
The first gold medal in the men’s competition was achieved by Nepali National Championships bronze medallist Tej Bahadur Deuba of Tribhuwan Army Club who defeated Ganesh Bohara in the final of the Light Flyweight class (49 kg). Incheon 2014 Asian Games competitor Prem Chaudhary has got experiences from several international tournaments therefore he was in different level than Shakti Lama in the final of the Men’s Flyweight class (52 kg) in Kathmandu.
Dinesh Shrestha is a veteran boxer who competed in the last edition of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships in Bangkok and won bouts in the international level in 2015. Nepal’s most strongest Bantamweight class (56 kg) boxer did not give any chance to Arjun Singu and claimed gold and a place in the national squad.
Dan Bahadur Darlami is a newcomer in the elite level but his tactical and technical skills were enough to beat favourite Bhupendra Thapa in the final of the Lightweight class (60 kg) which was stopped by the referee in the first round. ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships and AIBA World Boxing Championships competitor Deepak Shrestha continued his winning path in the national level and defeated Nivas Tandukar in the final of the Light Welterweight class (64 kg).
Nepali National Championships silver medallist Bikash Lama competed in the Doha International Tournament this year and he was able to keep his position in the national team following his gold medal at the Welterweight class (69 kg). Dipesh Lama had strong rivals in the event but the Middleweight class (75 kg) boxer was able to beat Amar Bista, Dilip Lama and Mahendra as well.
