Mr. Zoltan Szalma – The ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships had many strengths in Fujairah

Mr. Zoltan Szalma of Hungary worked as Referee & Judge Evaluator at the recent ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates which was a strong success this month. As one of the ITOs of the ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships he analysed the progress of the competition.

Mr. Zoltan Szalma began his boxing career at the age of 10 and had altogether 200 national and international bouts. During his career as a boxer he claimed five national titles and competed in an AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships. As a Referee & Judge he worked in top World, European, African and Commonwealth events and also supported the World Series of Boxing. He studied in the Sport University of Budapest and received master degree as boxing coach as well.

“The ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships was not my first Asian event this year and I was happy to come back again to a continental event as R&J Evaluator. I believe to organize such a big event as the ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships is a very complex task from the organizers. The issues, which we had, were quickly solved by the Local Organizing Committee.

I realized many strengths in this ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships starting from the fantastic arena where the event was held in Fujairah. The Opening Ceremony was impressed me and also the introduction of the boxers, the quality of the bouts, the medal ceremonies and the friendly atmosphere of the competition. I would like to thank you for the local organizers, ASBC President and ASBC management to arrange this event in such high level.

I believe it was a fantastic feeling for these 15 and 16 years old boxers to get the chance to represent their countries in Fujairah. The boxers respected each other and our rules and we would follow honest fights in the event. Many of these young talents had amazing physical skills, strength, technical and tactical knowledge in the event and boxed as elites.

We saw many narrow fights among these well-prepared young talented boxers and personally I think each weight class have been won by the best boxers. The Referees & Judges worked strongly in this competition and the positive environment supported them to keep the focus in the championship.

Following the strong development of the Asian continent, their boxers reached the level of the Europeans in the recent years. I recognized that many new Asian countries joined to the international events and these nations are trying to build up strong teams and traditions. Many of the Asian countries are powerhouses in our sport and getting stronger in the recent years.

There are plenty of Asian nations where boxing is a traditional sport and their boxers proved tough performance in the ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships. Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Palestine, Kuwait, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates sent also talented boxers to the event and they have the realistic potential to get medals in the upcoming years,” analysed Mr. Zoltan Szalma after the event.
