Mongolia’s Enkhmandakh Kharkhuu was the main surprise of the male quarter-finals at the World Military Games where Asia’s dominancy continued

The boxing tournament of the World Military Games turned to its medal phase in the city of Wuhan, China. The women’s semi-finals delivered fantastic bouts and Chinese dominancy on home soil. The male quarter-finals saw also strong Asian successes but the main surprise was done by Mongolia’s Enkhmandakh Kharkhuu who eliminated India’s AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Amit Panghal.

Host China, DPR Korea, India, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Mongolia, Thailand and Uzbekistan are the bests in the boxing tournament of the World Military Games in Wuhan. All of them have got medallists in the World Military Games in Wuhan which will be also the venue of the 2020 Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event.

DPR Korea’s AIBA Women’s World Champion Pang Chol Mi advanced to the final at the flyweight (51kg)
DPR Korea’s Pang Chol Mi was AIBA Women’s World Champion in 2018 and ASBC Asian Women’s Champion this April therefore her success over Russia’s Aleksandra Kuleshova was an expected result in the semi-finals of the World Military Games. The 25-year-old North Korean will be boxing for the title of the World Military Games with China’s promising Wu Yu who eliminated Vietnam’s Trinh Thi Kieu Diem who moved up from the light flyweight (48kg) for this event.

Chinese dominancy in the women’s semi-finals
China’s Liu Piaopiao moved up to the featherweight (57kg) and defeated a neighbouring rival, DPR Korea’s Ri Ok Byol which means she will be able to box for the title against Russia’s Saiana Sagataeva. China’s lightweight (60kg) boxer Xu Zichun had a tough semi-final against Venezuela’s Krisandy Rios but following that success she can fight for the title against another South American, Brazil’s defending AIBA Women’s World Champion Beatriz Ferreira for the gold of the lightweight (60kg). China’s AIBA Women’s World Champion Dou Dan triumphed over Kazakhstan’s Bayan Akbayeva and will be meeting for the gold against DPR Korea’s Kim Jin Son.

Asian successes at the men’s light flyweight (49kg)
Kazakhstan’s Amman 2013 ASBC Asian Champion Temirtas Zhussupov was more experienced than Colombia’s Cristian Camilo Torres therefore he could advance to the semi-finals of the light flyweight (49kg). DPR Korea’s Kim Jang Ryong has done a small sensation when he defeated China’s top local hope, previous WSB boxer Wu Zhonglin. India’s ASBC Asian Boxing Championships silver medallist Deepak controlled his quarter-final against Thailand’s Samak Saehan which means three Asians remained in the last four.

Mongolia’s Enkhmandakh Kharkhuu delivered the main sensation of the male quarter-finals in Wuhan where he defeated India’s AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Amit Panghal in a superb fight. DPR Korea’s technician Ri Sung Jin eliminated Kazakhstan’s Anvar Muzaparov before China’s Zhang Guo succeeded over Belarus’ Aliaksandr Butrym. The fourth Asian semi-finalist will be South Korea’s Kang Dong Heon who outpointed Myanmar’s Maung Chit San making perfect day for our continent.

Abdurasulov and Choe won the hectic bouts at the lightweight (60kg)
Uzbekistan’s Jakarta 2018 Asian Games silver medallist Shunkor Abdurasulov had to meet with China’s lightweight (60kg) No.1 Shan Jun in the quarter-finals of the Games. The 21-year-old Uzbek had amazing stamina in the final period of the bout and eliminated the Rio 2016 Olympian Chinese boxer. DPR Korea’s Choe Chol Man had strong international results in the recent one and half year and defeated South Korea’s Hyeon Dong Ju in hectic quarter-final and became guaranteed medallist at the lightweight (60kg).

Ardee returned with a guaranteed medal at the welterweight (69kg)
Thailand’s three-time Olympian Saylom Ardee had to miss several events in the recent half year but the Army boxer returned in top shape. The 33-year-old welterweight (69kg) boxer controlled all of the rounds against Morocco’s Badreddine Haddioui and reached the last four in Wuhan. Kazakhstan’s Asian games silver medallist Aslanbek Shymbergenov had harder job but he managed to beat Russia’s veteran Armen Zakaryan. Uzbekistan’s ASBC Asian Youth Champion Bilolbek Mirzarakhimov stopped India’s Duryodhan Singh Negi in the third round and secured his place in the semi-finals.
