Malshani takes Best Boxer award in Sri Lankan Women’s National Championships

Rising star Lokuge Ishara Nishadi Malshani emerged as the Best Boxer after displaying an impressive performance in the Sri Lankan Women’s National Championships held recently at the Royal MAS Arena in Colombo.

The 22-year-old Malshani, a bronze medalist in the ASBC Asian U22 Championships 2022, flaunted her slick technique and strong punching to rout Army boxer M.G.M.T. Dashunika, 5-0, in the flyweight (52kg) class.

Meanwhile, three-time national champion Ranasingha Arachchige Nadeeka Pushpakumari kept her dominance as she routed Nawodya Sandeepani Wellapilli, 5-0, in minimumweight (48kg).

Another veteran in Keshani Hansika defended her featherweight (57kg) title after stopping G.W.G.C. Tharuka in the opening round while ASBC competitor Henayale Gedara S. Priyadarshani pummelled P.M. Widanagamage, 5-0, in flyweight (50kg).

Muthuthanthri Sajeewani Cooray received the Dian Gomes Challenge Cup following her first-round RSC victory over E.N.L. Udayakumara in the lightweight (60kg) division of the tournament joined by 40 elite women boxers.

Five more champions were hailed on the final day which was witnessed by IBA Board of Directors member and Boxing Association of Sri Lanka President Dian Gomes.

The winners earned a chance to be selected for the national team that will compete in the upcoming IBA Women’s World Championships on March 15-26 in New Delhi, India.
