Kyrgyzstan’s international tourney now underway in Bishkek

Numerous fine fighters in Central Asia are battling it out in the ongoing 44th Duisenkul Shopokov Memorial Tournament, the international tournament of Kyrgyzstan, being held in the capital city of Bishkek.

Kazakhstan’s former AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medalist Milana Safronova is the heavy favorite in the welterweight (66kg) division while Uzbekistan’s AIBA Youth world champion Jakhongir Zokirov is tabbed to rule the men’s super heavyweight (92kg+) class.

ASBC Asian U22 female winners Farzona Fozilova and Feruza Kazakova of Uzbekistan are also competing in Asia’s second international tilt this year following the Thailand Open last April.

Kyrgyzstan’s top male boxers in Omurbek Bekzhigit Uulu, Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu, Nuradin Rustambek Uulu, Zhantoro Tashiyev, Nurzhigit Duishebayev and Erkin Adylbek Uulu are seen as strong contenders in their respective categories.

A total of 122 male pugilists have joined the fray this year along with some of the best female fighters in Central Asia.

The event gets going again following a three-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was named after Mr. Duisenkul Shopokov, the hero of the Soviet Union who died during the Great Patriotic War at the Battle of Moscow in December 1941.
