Kazakhstan, Thailand reap golds in Silesian Open

Kazakhstan snagged four gold medals while Thailand bagged two in the elite category of the 17th Silesian Women’s Open Tournament that recently concluded in Gliwice, Poland.

Two-time world champion and defending ASBC Asian titlist Nazym Kyzaibay led Kazakhstan’s golden campaign as she never lost a round against four European foes en route to the light flyweight (50kg) title.

World bronze medalist Karina Ibragimova crushed Serbia’s Jelena Zekic and Poland’s world silver winner Sandra Kruk before surviving a tough match against Thailand’s Nilawan Techasuep, 2-1, in the featherweight (57kg) final.

Former world titlist Lazzat Kungeibayeva and world silver finisher Alua Balkybekova also delivered golds for the Central Asian powerhouse by dominating the heavyweight (+81kg) and minimumweight (48kg) divisions, respectively.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s world silver medalist and Tokyo Olympian Jutamas Jitpong lived up to the billing by beating four opponents including multiple world medalist Zhaina Shekerbekova of Kazakhstan to take home the bantamweight (54kg) gold.

Rising star Baison Manikon, who was named best boxer in the ASBC Asian Youth Championships 2019 and competed in the Olympics last year, trounced three European bets to reign supreme in the light middleweight (70kg) class.

Thailand and Kazakhstan sent their female fighters to the Silesian Open to prepare them for the ASBC Asian Elite Championships 2022 slated on October 30 to November 13 in Amman, Jordan.
