Iran earned its first gold medal at the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships since 2017

The Iranians earned their first Asian title at the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships since the 2017 edition of the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships. Iran claimed medals in all of the previous Asian events but the gold was missing from their collection since 2017.

The President of the Iranian Boxing Federation Mr. Hossein Souri and the management arranged training camps for their elite, youth and junior boxers this year despite of the tough Covid-19 situation which affects the country.

Iran sent fifteen boxers to the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships, six junior hopes and nine youth talents. Iran achieved altogether ten podium places including one gold, two silver and seven bronze medals in Dubai. Their junior talents bagged one gold and two bronze medals in the ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships.

Iran delivered one of the most unexpected result in the men’s junior age group during the championships. Uzbekistan’s ASBC Asian Schoolboys Champion Mizrob Nekboyev moved up to the middleweight (75kg) and arrived to Dubai as the main favourite of the category. The 16-year-old Uzbek met with Iran’s Hirbod Eslami in the final who eliminated a more experienced Tajik boxer in the semi-finals.

Nekboyev had better defensive skills and he caught the Iranian with right-handed jabs in the first round but Eslami also had a few nice punches in the opening two minutes. The inexperienced Iranian had the strong fighting spirit and stamina in their southpaw battle and he surprised Nekboyev therefore the final verdict was depended on their performance in the third round. Surprisingly Eslami won their final by split decision (3:2) over the tough Uzbek in the ninth competition day of the event.

Their youth boxers earned two silver and five bronze medals in the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships. Aliasghar Afshari (54kg) and Fardin Khalifehlou (75kg) were their silver medallists, both lost to more experienced Kazakh boxers in their finals.
