Eranda, Prasanna, Rajakaruna and Ariyarathna are the main sensations in the Sri Lankan National Championships

The Sri Lankan National Boxing Championships for the elite female and male boxers is underway in their capital city in Colombo. High number of unexpected results have been delivered by younger male boxers in the National Championships which were delivered by K.V. Lasindu Eranda, P.A. Rukmal Prasanna, R.W.M. Sanjeewa Rajakaruna and W.K.M.K.G. Indika Ariyarathna.

South Asian Games winner Wanni Arachchige Rumesh Sandakelum won his weight class in the National Championships. The national competition is the next phase of selections before the main goals of the year therefore all of the best Sri Lankan women and men boxers attended in Colombo.

The President of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka and ASBC EC member Mr. Dian Gomes followed all days of actions in the National Championships. Singapore’s ASBC EC member Mr. Syed Abdul Kadir worked in the Sri Lankan National Boxing Championships as neutral official.

The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka invited neutral referees & judges from various Asian nations to arrange fair play and clear scorings in the National Boxing Championships. Experienced international R&Js as Chinese Taipei’s duo Liu Ming Li and Chan Hung Ming, South Korea’s Kim Ji Hyun, Singapore’s Steve Nathan and Indonesia’s Muhammad Arisa Putra are supporting the success of the Sri Lankan National Boxing Championships.

The first gold medal of the women’s part of the Sri Lankan National Championships was achieved by R.A. Nadeeja Pushpakumari who is their best light flyweight (48kg) boxer and has been attending in the national events since 2013. The experienced boxer had to do her very best to beat Unichela’s R.K.A.A. Ranasingha in the first final of the event.

Kosala Nilmini competed already at the 2017 ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships and her experiences paid off when she met in the final of the flyweight (51kg) with K. Inthugadevi. Muthuthanthri Sajeewani Cooray is also an international level boxer from Sri Lanka who defeated the main surprise of the bantamweight (54kg) W.S.P. Rathnayaka in the final of the event.

Krishmi Ayoma Dharmathilaka attended in the last two editions of the ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships therefore her success at the featherweight (57kg) was expected but she spent less than two rounds in the ring during her campaign in the event. Keshani Kasthuri Hansika is another experienced national team member who dominated the women’s lightweight (60kg) while promising B.D.R. Mendis claimed the gold in her new category at the light welterweight (64kg).

Army’s Sajeewa Nuwan represented Sri Lanka at the light flyweight (49kg) in the recent international events and his experiences paid off in the final against N. Jinadasa. Slimline’s K.V. Lasindu Eranda is only 20 but he is one of the most promising boxers in Sri Lanka who eliminated the Seed No.1 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Seneviratne Bandara in the semi-finals of the flyweight (52kg) and stopped also P.G.E Madushan in the final.

Police’s 20-year-old P.A. Rukmal Prasanna attended two editions of the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships and also competed international event in Bulgaria but his successes over former National Champions W.R.T. Weerakoddi and U.N.K. Amarawansha show his amazing developments. Army’s M.B.A.J. Wimukthi Kumara achieved the gold of the men’s lightweight (60kg) which was his next title.

Army’s R.W.M. Sanjeewa Rajakaruna delivered the top sensation of the whole Sri Lankan National Championships who defeated Slimline’s AIBA World Boxing Championships competitor Dushan Dinidu Saparamadu in the final of the light welterweight (64kg). Saparamadu won all of his national events in the recent five years which was ended in a hectic final battle against Rajakaruna.

Niel M. Hettiarachchi was the main favourite at the welterweight (69kg) and he realized his previous expectations reaching the gold in Colombo. Navy’s W.K.M.K.G. Indika Ariyarathna was an unseeded athlete at the middleweight (75kg) but he defeated South Asian Games silver medallist Pathirage Don Dinesh Maduranga and all of the other top boxers. South Asian Games winner Wanni Arachchige Rumesh Sandakelum (81kg) and Addurakaram R.B.E. Thilakarathna (+91kg) controlled their weight classes in the national event.
