Duisenkul Shopokov Memorial Tournament set next month in Bishkek

Dubbed as Kyrgyzstan’s main international boxing competition, the Duisenkul Shopokov Memorial Tournament will return this year with its 45th edition on March 20-26 at the Kozhomkul Sports Palace in the capital city of Bishkek.

The upcoming Shopokov tourney will serve as a preparation for the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships schedule on May 1-14 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and Asian Games in September in Hangzhou, China.

Boxers born between 1983 and 2004 are eligible to participate in this year’s traditional event that will hold contests in the 13 official weight classes for elite men (48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63.5kg, 67kg, 71kg, 75kg, 80kg, 86kg, 92kg and +92kg).

Deadline of registration is on March 15.

The tournament is dedicated to Duisenkul Shopokov, the hero of the Soviet Union who died during the Great Patriotic War at the Battle of Moscow in December 1941.

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and host Kyrgyzstan shared the gold medals in the previous iteration joined by 122 men and 50 women pugilists last May 2022.

Uzbekistan’s teen sensation Jakhongir Zokirov, who is a former youth world champion and a two-time defending ASBC Asian U22 titlist, emerged as the star last year in Bishkek.
