ASBC U22 medalist Qaiyum stars in Malaysian National Cup

Rising star Muhammad Abdul Qaiyum Bin Ariffin shone the brightest in the recently concluded Malaysian National Cup after coming out on top of the flyweight (51kg) class in Negeri Sembilan.

ASBC Asian U22 Championships bronze medalist Qaiyum, who joined five premier events in the last 12 months, proved too experienced for all his rivals, including Mohamad Alif Bin Mat Nawi in the final.

Sarawak’s Jackson Chambai is their best boxer in the smallest weight class and he defeated his final opponent Shamsuhairi Bin Shamshudin by RSC in the first round, earning his next national title in Negeri Sembilan.

Jemis Wong Lee Onn eliminated his main rival, Daeloniel McDelon Bong in the semi-finals of the bantamweight (54kg) and following that tough battle, he had an easier pathway for the gold medal.

Commonwealth Games campaigner Sheikh Rahmatullah Bin Ibrahim topped the tough featherweight (57kg) division after beating Alif Akmal in the gold medal match.

An experienced Army boxer, Mohammad Zulkhailane Bin Mohamed Nor remained on the top of the podium at the lightweight (60kg) and defended his national throne against Megat Mohammed Izuddin.

Muhammad Ridzuan Bin Mohamed Johari won all of his three contests at the light welterweight (63.5kg) and outpointed Abdul Rahim Bin Yussof for the title, winning it unanimously.

Former national team member Indran Ramakrishnan made a successful return by outclassing Mohammad Zulfadhli for the cruiserweight (86kg) title.

The Malaysians competed at the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships in Bangkok this January and their boxers had to participate in the next event within very short period of time. Their program was busy in 2022 with participations in the ASBC Championships, Southeast Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.

This year’s five-day Malaysian National Cup served as an initial selection for the Southeast Asian Games set to be held in May in Cambodia.

A total of 71 elite men boxers participated in the tournament that crowned 12 champions.
