Bhutan returns to ASBC elite field with 5 boxers

After missing the previous edition in Dubai, United Arab Emirate two years ago, Bhutan will send its five finest fighters as it makes its comeback to the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships.

Bhutan last competed in Asian Elite Championships 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand. With the full support from the government this time, the Bhutanese boxers are all set to compete in Amman, Jordan from October 30 to November 13.

National team veteran Tashi Wangdi, a winner in the inaugural Bhutan International Boxing Championships and a  bronze medalist in the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament in 2019, will compete in the minimumweight (48kg) division.

Fellow seasoned pugs Nima Dorji (light-60kg), Dorji Wangdi (light welter-63.5kg) and Thinley (middle-75kg) will also battle it out in the continental meet.

Rounding out the squad is emerging boxer Tenzin Drugyel (fly-51kg) who experienced fighting in the South Asian Games, Thailand Open and other international tilts.

Drugyel and Tashi Wangdi have been chosen to train in the boxing powerhouse Thailand as part of the program which was agreed upon by ASBC and Thailand Boxing Association President Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira and Bhutan National Olympic Committee President HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuk.

As such, the two boxers are expected to lead Bhutan’s hunt for a medal in Amman following a fruitless campaign in its last appearance in the Asian elite tourney.
