Asian U22 medalist Rasheed reigns supreme in Pakistan Elite tilt

Emerging star Zohaib Rasheed came up with a methodical win against Sajid Rasheed to cop the flyweight (51kg) title in the Pakistan Elite National Boxing Championships staged recently at the Captain Fasih Babar Amin Shaheed Sports Complex in Lahore.

Rasheed, who earned a bronze medal in the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships held last January, grabbed a chance to represent Pakistan again as the national tilt served as a selection tournament for the Commonwealth Games in July and ASBC Asian Championships next year.

Meanwhile, Suleman Baloch turned back Mohib Ullah in the light welterweight (63.5kg) final while fellow veteran Gul Zaib dominated Saeed Anwar in the welterweight (69kg) title bout.

Nazeer Ullah delivered the biggest upset of the event as he stunned longtime national squad standout Mehmood Sanaullah in the heavyweight (92kg) class even as Zakir Hussain remained a national champion by beating Ahmed Afridi in featherweight (57kg).

In the lone women’s contest, Mehreen Baloch thumped Fatima Zahra in featherweight for the right to compete in the Commonwealth Games.

Pakistan Boxing Federation president Mr. Muhammad Khalid Mahmood expressed his gratitude to DHA Lahore administrator Brigadier Waheed Gul Satti and sports director Brigadier Minur Ahmad for hosting the national elite event in the city where 10 boxers won a gold medal.
