Altogether 57 boxes from our continent qualified for Tokyo through the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event

The finals and the last part of the Box-offs were in the official program at the ninth competition day of the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Amman, Jordan. Altogether 63 quota places found their owners in the event, among them 57 are Asians who will be able to compete also in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

More than 220 boxers competed in the event which is one of the most important Asian challenges of the year. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, India, China, Australia, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Chinese Taipei, Tajikistan, Jordan, Iran, Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan and Philippines attended in the event with the biggest and strongest delegations in Amman where the crowd saw several tough fights.

China’s Chang Yuan became the first champion in Amman

China’s Chang Yuan was the main favourite of the women’s flyweight (51kg) in spite of the fact she was not seeded in Amman. She was AIBA Women’s Junior World Champion in 2013 and Youth Olympic Games winner in 2014. The 23-year-old Chinese boxer eliminated India’s six-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte in the semi-finals and she was too smart for Japan’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Tsukimi Namiki in the final. Chang Yuan was the first champion of the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event.

Chinese Taipei’s AIBA Women’s World Champion Lin Yu Ting won her next big event

Chinese Taipei’s AIBA Women’s World Champion Lin Yu Ting is only 24 but in the recent four years she lost only a few international bouts. The two-time ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Lin eliminated all of her main rivals in the road to the finals where she met with Japan’s two-time AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Sena Irie. Lin used her best weapon the long distance tactic which was based on a lot of footwork and counter-punches. The smaller Japanese was tried to get closer to her but Lin’s tactical weapons delivered a clear success for Chinese Taipei.

South Korea’s best woman boxer Oh Yeon Ji won her fourth Asian title in Amman

South Korea’s exciting female boxer Oh Yeon Ji was Asian Games winner in 2018 and ASBC Asian Women’s Champion in 2015 and also in 2017. The South Korean boxer was not seeded at the women’s lightweight (60kg) but she is the best one in the continent. Oh eliminated her main rival Thailand’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist Sudaporn Seesondee in the semi-finals and her way was open to get a gold in Amman. Oh met in the final with India’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Simranjit Kaur who moved down one category in the recent months. The South Korean boxer used his uncomfortable style in the final and won the title in Jordan’s capital.

China’s duo Gu Hong and Li Qian won the gold medals in Amman

China’s Gu Hong and Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien Chin are not only the best Asian boxers at the women’s welterweight (69kg) but in the world as well. Gu Hong was patient and she did make any risk in the final against Chinese Taipei’s AIBA Women’s World Champion and her tactical weapons delivered for her a gold medal in Amman. Her teammate AIBA Women’s World Champion and Rio 2016 Olympic Games bronze medallist Li Qian used her longer reach well against Australia’s Caitlin Parker and won the title of the middleweight (75kg).

Uzbekistan’s Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov and Elnur Abduraimov won their weight classes against veteran rivals

Uzbekistan’s Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov won the gold medal at the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships but he had to do his very best to win his opening fight in Amman. The Uzbek featherweight (57kg) boxer survived that contest and continued his winning path dominating his final over Jordan’s veteran Mohammed Al-Wadi. His experienced compatriot Elnur Abduraimov was bronze medallist in the Doha 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships but his title in Amman was over his previous limits. The 26-year-old Uzbek was slightly better than Kazakhstan’s Zakir Safiullin and delivered his nation’s second gold medal in the event.

Philippines’ Eumir Felix Marcial arrived to the Asian top at the middleweight

Philippines’ AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Eumir Felix Marcial has been attending in the international events since 2011. The Filipino middleweight (75kg) boxer was unlucky in the last Olympic cycle but he had all the potentials to prove it much better following his 24th birthday. Marcial was too strong for India’s Ashish Kumar in the semi-finals and continued his winning path against Kazakhstan’s Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Abilkhan Amankul in a remarkable final.

Kazakhstan’s AIBA World Champion Bekzad Nurdauletov and Vasiliy Levit delivered their gold medals

Kazakhstan’s Bekzad Nurdauletov was gold medallist at the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships and he repeated that strong performance at the light heavyweight (81kg) of the Qualifiers. The 21-year-old Kazakh boxer, who was born in Turkmenistan, dominated his semi-final over Jordan’s Odai Riyad Al-Hindawi but he had another easy fight against Australia’s Paulo Aokuso in the final. Kazakhstan’s second gold medal was achieved by Rio 2016 Olympic Games silver medallist and three-time ASBC Asian Champion Vasiliy Levit who used his experiences to beat New Zealand’s David Nyika at the heavyweight (91kg).
