Thitisan Panmod and Chang Yuan eliminated icons in the semi-finals of the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event

The semi-finals were in the official program at the eighth competition day of the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Amman, Jordan. China’s Asian Games winner Chang Yuan defeated India’s boxing icon Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte while Thailand’s 19-year-old Thitisan Panmod bowed out Uzbekistan’s Olympic Champion Shakhobiddin Zoirov.  

More than 220 boxers are competing in the event which is one of the most important Asian challenges of the year. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, India, China, Australia, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Chinese Taipei, Tajikistan, Jordan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Philippines attend in the event with the biggest and strongest delegations in Amman.

China’s Chang Yuan defeated India’s icon Mary Kom in the semi-finals of the women’s flyweight (51kg)

China’s Chang Yuan won her first big international event in 2013 as a junior boxer and after seven years of experiences the 23-year-old hope is now one of the best talents in the flyweight (51kg). The Chinese boxer used her impressive attacks to catch India’s six-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte. Chang Yuan worked more on feet and bowed out the Indian star who moved up from the light flyweight (48kg). The Chinese boxer will be meeting with Japan’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Tsukimi Namiki.

Japan’s Sena Irie advanced to the finals of the Qualifiers

Japan’s two-time AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Sena Irie will be turning to 20 later this year but her technical skills and fighting spirit are amazing. The 19-year-old Japanese featherweight (57kg) boxer was slightly better than Philippines’ defending AIBA Women’s World Champion Nesthy Petecio in the quarter-finals and continued her winning path also in the last four. Irie had to meet with South Korea’s AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Im Ae Ji and following her success, she can box in the final of the weight class with Chinese Taipei’s star Lin Yu Ting.

South Korea’s best woman boxer Oh Yeon Ji advanced to the finals as expected

South Korea’s Oh Yeon Ji was Asian Games winner in 2018 and ASBC Asian Women’s Champion in 2015 and also in 2017. The South Korean boxer is definitely the best Asian lightweight (60kg) boxers in the continent currently who used an aggressive tactic against Thailand’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist Sudaporn Seesondee. The South Korean No.1 landed punches from all possible angles and advanced to the final of the category where she will be boxing with India’s Simranjit Kaur.

Thailand’s 19-year-old Thitisan Panmod defeated the Uzbek Olympic Champion at the flyweight (52kg)

Thailand sent their youngest ever teams to the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event and their 19-year-old Thitisan Panmod amazed the experts in the day of the semi-finals. Panmod claimed gold at the Budapest 2018 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships and quickly won his first elite event, the Gee Bee Tournament in Helsinki last March. Panmod recovered from his injury and he was motivated in the whole Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. Thailand’s teenage hope worked well against Uzbekistan’s defending Olympic and World Champion Shakhobiddin Zoirov and secured his place in the finals causing a big surprise in Amman.

Uzbekistan’s Elnur Abduraimov and Kazakhstan’s Zakir Safiullin will be facing for the gold of the lightweight (63kg)

Uzbekistan’s Elnur Abduraimov was bronze medallist in the Doha 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships and achieved medals also in the ASBC Asian Championships. The 26-year-old Uzbek boxer has been competing in the international stage since 2011 and after all those experiences his hard work paid off in Amman. Abduraimov eliminated Australia’s Harry Garside in the quarter-finals and continued his winning path against Mongolia’s first quota holder Chinzorig Baatarsukh. The Uzbek will be meeting with Kazakhstan’s Zakir Safiullin who dominated his semi-final over Jordan’s Obada Al-Kasbeh.

The two best Asians of the middleweight Amankul and Marcial both are finalists

Philippines’ lone quota holder for Tokyo Eumir Felix Marcial impressed in the eighth competition day once again and used his stronger punches to land enough clear shots in the semi-finals of the middleweight (75kg). The Filipino, who claimed silver at the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships, was better than India’s Ashish Kumar in all aspects of boxing and secured his place in the finals. Marcial will be boxing for the gold medal with Kazakhstan’s Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Abilkhan Amankul who returned to the national team.

Kazakhstan’s AIBA World Champion Bekzad Nurdauletov and Vasiliy Levit defeated their Jordanian rivals on Day8

Kazakhstan’s Bekzad Nurdauletov had amazing results in the junior and youth events but he has done his real breakthrough at the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships where he claimed gold medal at the light heavyweight (81kg). The 21-year-old Kazakh boxer dominated his semi-final over Jordan’s Odai Riyad Al-Hindawi and will be meeting in the final with Australia’s fighter Paulo Aokuso. His fellow, three-time ASBC Asian Champion Vasiliy Levit overwhelmed Jordan’s Rio 2016 Olympian Hussein Iashaish in the semi-finals of the heavyweight (91kg).
