The President of the Asian Boxing Confederation Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira and the entire ASBC management are sending their best wishes to the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines on their country’s Independence Day

The Philippine Independence Day, also known as Araw ng Kalaayan, is an annual national holiday throughout in the country. 

June 12 commemorates the declaration of Philippine Independence from Spain in 1898. 

The Philippines was one of the first Asian nations which participated in the boxing events of the Olympic Games, debuting in the Los Angeles 1932 edition. Filipino boxers habe competed and qualified in 20 editions of the Olympic Games between 1932 and 20121. 

Since the qualification procedure was established prior to the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, the Philippines’ best boxers qualified in each of the Games in Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, Beijing, London, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. 

Filipinos also impressed in the boxing events of the Asian Games, as their boxers have  earned a total of 15 gold, 10 silver and 31 bronze medals between 1954 and 2018. The Southeast Asian country is ranked No.5 in the overall medal table after South Korea, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. 

The Philippines topped the medal table twice in the Asiad, first in Manila in 1954 then at the Hiroshima edition in 1994. Rey Saludar captured their last gold at the Asian Games at the flyweight (52kg) in the Guangzhou 2010 edition. 

The Philippines has won two gold, two silver and seven bronze medals in the history of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. Josie Gabuco in 2012 and Nesthy Petecio in the Ulan-Ude edition won their titles in 2019. 

Filipino male boxers earned a total of six medals in the AIBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships including three silver and three bronze. 

Their Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Eumir Felix Marcial bagged a silver medal in the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships.

Two more boxers contributed to the best Philippine performance ever, as they plucked silver medals in Tokyo 2020: Carlo Paalam and female Nesthy Petecio.
