Zhussupov eliminated a favourite on the eighth day of boxing in the AIBA World Boxing Championships

The winners of the eighth day of competition are advanced to the last 16 at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Boxers at the welterweight (69kg), middleweight (75kg) and super heavyweight (+91kg) were in actions on Day8. Kazakhstan’s Ablaikhan Zhussupov had to meet already with Thailand’s Wuttichai Masuk in the second preliminary round and won the battle of the favourites.
The Asian teams prepared strongly to the Yekaterinburg 2019 World Boxing Championships in the recent months after the Bangkok ASBC Asian Boxing Championships and our continent has got several medal and title favourites in Russia. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, India, China, Thailand, Philippines, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Jordan, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan and many other teams from our continent have got world class boxers.
Altogether 107 Asian elite male boxers are attending in the event from 21 nations: Afghanistan, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Philippines, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan’s ASBC Asian Champion and Asian Games winner Bobo-Usmon Baturov is the Seed No.3 at the welterweight (69kg) who had to meet with a six-years younger rival, Argentina’s Youth Olympic Games gold medallist Brian Arregui. The Uzbek boxer moved ahead confidently and the he was still too strong for the young Argentinean which means Baturov advanced to the last 16.
Mongolia’s Bayarkhuu Ganbaatar replaced their veteran boxer Byamba Tuvshinbat in the national team at the welterweight (69kg) and his efforts were paid off when he met with Chinese Taipei’s Pan Hung Ming. The 23-year-old Mongolian attended only in a few international competitions but he looked confident against the FISU University World Champion Pan.
Jordan’s ASBC Asian Boxing Championships bronze medallist Zeyad Eshaish had a tough opponent India’s Duryodhan Singh Negi in the preliminary round but he was able to manage his success and followed his elder brother Hussein to the last 16. Japan’s ASBC Asian Boxing Championships silver medallist Sewon Okazawa used his tempo well to beat France’s Wahid Hambli in a narrow bout.
Kazakhstan’s AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Ablaikhan Zhussupov was Youth Olympic Games winner in 2014 as well. The 22-year-old Kazakh arrived to Yekaterinburg with perfect record in 2019 and he was confident against Thailand’s No.1 Wuttichai Masuk as well. Zhussupov proved he is a strong favourite in this event and eliminated Thailand’s Asian Games winner experienced hope.
Kazakhstan’s defending ASBC Asian Champion at the middleweight (75kg) Tursynbai Kulakhmet fought out his place in the top national team to the age of 25 but he arrived also to Yekaterinburg with unbeaten series as Zhussupov. Kulakhmet had impressive footwork once again and did not give any chance to United States’ Javier Martinez eliminating his rival unanimously in Russia.
Iran’s ASBC Asian Boxing Championships bronze medallist Seyed Shahin Mousavi boxed from longer distance against China’s Tuohetaerbieke Tanglatihan and secured his place in the last 16. Philippines’ Asian Games bronze medallist Eumir Felix Marcial arrived to Yekaterinburg in top form and he also defeated an Asian opponent Kyrgyzstan’s 19-year-old Omurbek Bekzhigit Uulu winning the bout by unanimous decision.
