Zareen reigns supreme in Indian Women’s National Championships

Reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen punched her way to the gold medal in the light flyweight (50kg) division of the Indian Elite Women’s National Championships 2022 recently held in Bhopal.

The 26-year-old Zareen finished her undefeated run in 2022 with a dominant campaign in the national tilt where she posted convincing wins against five opponents, including a 4-1 victory over Anamika in the finals.

Defending ASBC Asian titlist and two-time world bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain battered Arundhati Choudhary, 5-0, for the middleweight (75kg) title.

Two-time youth world champ Sakshi Choudhary moved down to flyweight (52kg) where she clobbered another U22 standout Jyoti Gulia, 5-0.

Poonam, a youth world winner in 2021, made a successful debut in lightweight (60kg) as she pulled off a split decision against Tokyo Olympics veteran Simranjit Kaur.

Manju Rani (minimum-48kg), Manisha Moun (feather-57kg), Shashi Chopra (light welter-63kg) and Sanamacha Thokchom Chanu (light middle-70kg) were the other notable winners in the tournament.

A record number of 300 boxers from India’s 34 regions participated in the Elite Women’s National Championships 2022 which served as a crucial selection for the IBA Women’s World Championships 2023 set in New Delhi on March 15-31.

Young winners also earned a shot at joining the national squad that will compete in the ASBC Asian U22 Championships slated in Bangkok, Thailand in January.
