Youth world champion Gitika, Asian titlists prevail in India’s national event

Reigning youth world champion Gitika Narwal and five Asian winners reigned supreme in the women’s boxing competition of the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games held recently in Panchkula, Haryana.

Gitika, who copped the gold medal in the minimumweight (48kg) division of the AIBA Youth World Championships 2021, proved too strong to handle for Ragini Upadhyay of Uttar Pradesh and seized the first title in the national youth games.

On the other hand, ASBC Asian Youth Championships titlists Tamanna, Neha, Preeti Dahiya, Sneha Kumari and Khushi dominated their respective weight categories.

Tamanna trounced Subidha Bhagat of Punjab in the title bout of light flyweight (50kg) while Neha beat Aarti Dhariya for the bantamweight (54kg) gold.

Preeti Dahiya edged out Kalapana of Rajasthan in lightweight (60kg); Sneha Kumari turned back fellow national standout Muskan of Haryana in welterweight (66kg); and Khushi of Punjab pounded Ekta in middleweight (75kg).

Other gold medalists in the women’s boxing tournament of the India Youth Games were Ritu (flyweight-52kg), Preeti (featherweight-57kg), Isha Gurjar (light welterweight-63kg) and Lashu Yadav (light middleweight-70kg).

The Boxing Federation of India oversaw the event that drew a total of 109 young female fighters all over India.
