Veterans shined in the quarter-finals of the men’s featherweight at the Chinese National Games

The boxing event of the 14th Chinese National Games continued with various preliminary and quarter-finals battles in the city of Shaanxi. Tokyo Olympians as Chang Yuan and Chen Daxiang won their preliminary contests while veterans shined in the quarter-finals of the men’s featherweight (57kg).

The best Chinese female and male boxers competed at the Tokyo Olympic Games but many of their new young hopes are also competing at the National Games which is their most important competition in 2021. The National Games holds every four years in China and boxing is one of the highlights of the multisport event.

Boxers who were born between 1981 and 2002 are eligible to attend in the Chinese National Games in Shaanxi following the qualifiers. There were strong qualification process of the National Games and it started in Zhejiang, Hubei and continued with its second stage in Baoan a few months ago. The venue of the 14th Chinese National Games is the Sport Hall of the Yulin Vocational and Technical College.

Hebei’s Youth Olympic Games winner Chang Yuan lost his quarter-final surprisingly at the Tokyo Olympics but returned quickly to the events. The 24-year-old boxer defeated Guangxi’s Fu Tingting and advanced to the quarter-finals of the women’s flyweight (51kg). Chang Yuan’s main rival, ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships silver medallist 19-year-old Hu Meiyi of Shanghai was too smart for Wang Dingyi of Chongqing and also won her debuting contest by unanimous decision.

Guangdong’s veteran boxer Gao Linzhi has got one and half decade of experiences in the sport but his success over Anhui’s Wang Long was a sensation in the quarter-final of the men’s featherweight (57kg). Besides to Gao, another veteran boxer, 2010 Asian Games silver medallist 33-year-old Chang Yong of Shaanxi defeated Chen Zhihao of Zhejiang and also advanced to the semi-finals of this strong category.

Yunnan’s Shan Jun joined to the national team in 2014 and qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The currently 27-year-old boxer is the main favourite for the gold medal at the men’s lightweight (63kg) and proved his strong technical abilities in his second bout in Shaanxi. Following his first preliminary success, Shan Jun eliminated Wang Zhimin of Hubei and marched into the semi-finals of the category.

Jiangsu’s star Chen Daxiang claimed bronze medal at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event and earned a spot for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The tall light heavyweight (81kg) boxer competed in Tokyo where he won his opening contest and after the quarantine period, he attends in the National Games. Chen used his excellent technical skills to keep the best distance against Yin Jiyong of Qinghai and advanced to the quarter-finals winning the bout by unanimous decision.

Another favourite boxer at the men’s light heavyweight (81kg), Wen Yinhang of Hubei also impressed in the session. He won the title of the middleweight (75kg) in the last 2017 Chinese National Games but since then he changed to a heavier division. The experienced boxer started his debuting contest better and took the lead on the scorecards against Tianjin’s Shinal Harwu. The final verdict was unanimous decision in the favour of Wen Yinhang who proved that he could be a tough opponent for Chen Daxiang.
