Uzbekistan sent 10-strong team to Women’s World Championships

Uzbekistan will gun for its first-ever medal as it banners 10 pugilists in the 12th International Boxing Association (IBA) Women’s World Boxing Championships slated on May 9 to 20 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Seasoned national team standouts Navbakhor Khamidova (66kg-welterweight) and Mavluda Mavlonova (75kg-middleweight), who reaped honors in various international tourneys, will spearhead the Uzbek contingent that is eager to give the country its first medal of any color in the history of Women’s World Championships.

Reigning Asian featherweight (57kg) champion Sitora Turdibekova and Tokyo Olympics veteran Tursunoy Rakhimova (52kg-flyweight) will also compete in the international tilt featuring the top female boxers from 93 nations.

Others selected by Uzbekistan women’s national boxing team head coach Elshod Rasulov are national champion Mokhira Abdullayeva (+81kg-heavyweight), Marzhona Savriyeva (48kg-minimum), Aziza Yokubova (50kg-light fly), Nozima Bulturova (54kg-bantam), Mokhinabonu Abdullayeva (60kg-light) and Khadijabonu Abdullayeva (70kg-light middle).

Rasulov, who worked doubly hard to develop the female Uzbek fighters in the past two and a half years and helped three of them qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, came up with their final bets for the World Championships following their stellar performances in the preparatory events.
