Ex-world champs, rising stars banner 86 Asians in Women’s World tourney

Former world champions and emerging stars lead the 86-country contingent of Asia in the International Boxing Association (IBA) Women’s World Boxing Championships 2022 being held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Kazakhstan’s ex-world titleholders Nazym Kyzaibay, Dina Zholaman, Valentina Khalzova and Lazzat Kungeibayeva are all eager to reclaim lost glory while 2018 silver winner Zhaina Shekerbekova is bent on snaring gold this time.

Chinese Taipei’s prides – Huang Hsiao Wen, Lin Yu Ting and Chen Nien Chin are all ready to fight it out in their respective weight divisions.

Rising stars and veteran campaigners from India, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Kuwait, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are also geared up for the battle in Istanbul as the Asian pugilists comprise almost one-third or 27 percent of the total 310 participants from 73 countries around the world. Boxers born between 1981 and 2002 are eligible to participate in the world tilt as the age groups were adjusted accordingly following the postponement last December 2021.
