Tokyo Olympians – China’s Chang Yuan is one of the favourites of the women’s flyweight (51kg)

The Tokyo Olympic Games is ahead of us the re-scheduled event will be held in Japan between July 23 and August 8. The Asian Boxing Confederation introduces our quota holders who qualified already to Tokyo through the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which was held in Amman, Jordan on March 2020.

China’s outstanding female boxer, Chang Yuan was born on 24 June in 1997 and began boxing at the age of 10 in 2007. She competed already at the 2012 Chinese Women’s Junior National Championships where she earned a silver medal. Following her national title next year, she bagged also the gold medal at the 2013 AIBA Women’s Junior World Boxing Championships in Albena, Bulgaria.

Nanjing hosted the second Youth Olympic Games in 2014 where Chang Yuan defeated all of her strong rivals including Chinese Taipei’s Huang Hsiao Wen, Armenia’s Anush Grigoryan and Italy’s Irma Testa to get the title of the flyweight (51kg). She repeated that strong performance in the Taipei 2015 AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships and following that she has done successful debut among the elite boxers in 2016 when she won international events in Serbia, in Russia and in China.

Chang Yuan was 21 by the time of the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games but she was ready to get a top result in the elite competitions. The Chinese flyweight (51kg) boxer eliminated India’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist Sarjubala Shamjetsabam Devi and Chinese Taipei’s ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Lin Yu Ting in the previous two rounds of the Asian Games and reached the finals. The young Chinese boxer exceeded all of the previous expectations once again when she faced with DPR Korea’s Pang Chol Mi in the final and claimed a gold medal.

DPR Korea’s Pang Chol Mi became AIBA Women’s World Champion at the flyweight (51kg) after the Asian Games and eliminated China’s Asian Games winner Chang Yuan in the semi-finals of the Bangkok 2019 ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships which was a strong revenge in their repeat match. Chang earned bronze medal in the 2019 edition of the continental event but she returned to Bangkok and won the title of the strong Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament three months later.

China’s Chang Yuan was the main favourite of the women’s flyweight (51kg) in spite of the fact she was not seeded in Amman at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. The 23-year-old Chinese boxer eliminated India’s six-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte in the semi-finals and she was too smart for Japan’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Tsukimi Namiki in the final. Chang Yuan was the first champion of the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Amman on March 2020.
