The host Indonesian team is aiming for at least one medal in the boxing tournament of the Asian Games

Indonesia is the host of the Asian Games and their boxers are fully prepared to the start of the multisport event. The Opening Ceremony will be held in 2 days but the boxing tournament will be beginning only on August 24 in Jakarta. The host country will have maximum number of 10 boxers and aiming for at least one medal in the boxing event of the Asian Games.
Indonesia claimed 3 gold medals, 8 silvers and 13 bronze medals in the history of the Asian Games in boxing. Their 24 medals were achieved mainly in the past before the Soviet Union collapsed. Two of their gold medals were achieved by William Gommies in 1970 and in 1978 while the third was taken by Pino Bahari in 1990. It is worth to mention all of these gold medals were acquired by these two Indonesian stars at the middleweight.
Indonesia’s boxing team attended in the Asian Games Test Event in Jakarta, in the Nikolay Manger Memorial Tournament in Ukraine, in the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament in Bangkok and in the Kapolri Cup in Manado City as preparation. The Indonesian squad trained in Ukraine to prepare well against strong sparring partners to the Asian Games.
Their women boxing team was formed in 2006 and three of their female hopes received the right to represent the proud nation in Jakarta. AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Aldriani Beatrichx Suguro is member of the national team since 2012 and will be boxing at the flyweight (51kg).
Southeast Asian Games silver medallist Christina Marwan Jembay had a few strong victories in 2018 and has got medal expectations at the featherweight (57kg). The third female boxer in the Indonesian team will be a 20-year-old newcomer Huswatun Hasanah who claimed gold medal in their National Games at the lightweight (60kg).
Mario Blasius Kali won the President’s Cup in 2015 and regained his place in the national team this year. The 24-year-old light flyweight (49kg) boxer claimed bronze medal in the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament in Bangkok which was his last preparation event and showed strong performance against world class rivals.
Aldoms Suguro was Indonesia’s flag bearer in 2017 when he achieved gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur and also in the Ulaanbaatar Box Cup in Mongolia one year ago. The 23-year-old Indonesian flyweight (52kg) talent has got enough skills and potential to achieve a medal in the Asian Games but he needs to do over his limit to accomplish his goals in Jakarta.
Sunan Agung Amoragam won several Indonesian junior and youth events before winning the National Games in 2016. The super talented 21-year-old boxer moved up to the bantamweight (56kg) in the recent one year and achieved bronze medal in the last preparation event at the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament.
Two-time ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships competitor Farrand Papendang is Indonesia’s next hope for a medal in Jakarta who will be boxing at the men’s lightweight (60kg). His attitude is one of the bests in the national squad and defeated a few top boxers already in his boxing career and expecting a highlight in the Asian Games.
Indonesia’s light welterweight (64kg) hope Libertus Gha is a new member in the national team who joined this year to the Indonesian selections. A young 21-year-old prospect Saroha Tua Lumbantobing was silver medallist in the Southeast Asian Games one year ago and the 10th boxer in the team will be ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Bram Hendra Betaubun in Jakarta.
