The first medallists are revealed in the Indonesian National Games
The boxing tournament of the Indonesian National Games continued with 21 contests in the city of Bandung which is located in Eastern Jawa and is the country’s main boxing event in 2016. The first medals are revealed in the competition, the winners in the Light Welterweight class (64 kg), in the Welterweight class (69 kg) and in the Middleweight class (75 kg) are already medallists in the competition.
The National Games is holding for both genders and it is also a selection competition for the further international big events in the beginning of the new Tokyo 2020 Olympic era. After the selection events for the Indonesian National Games 175 boxers can take part in the competition in Bandung. Among them 67 will be women boxers while 31 provinces can send athletes to the Games where Jawa Island has got maximum number of 16 competitors. Maluku, Papua, and Sumatera also have got big delegations in the National Games.
National Golden Gloves winner Norbertha Tajum competed for Indonesia at the 2014 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Jeju and arrived to the National Games as a gold medal contender. Her main rival at the Women’s Bantamweight class (54 kg) is Southeast Asian Games bronze medallist Esther Kalayukin and the two boxers met each other in the first preliminary round in Bandung. Tajum was energetic and powerful in their contest and bowed from the way out her main rival on Day 3.
Indonesian Central Region Selection Tournament winner Weldy Mabilaka did a small sensation in the third competition day when he defeated Maluku’s Ralin Lumoly who was gold medallist in the 2014 Indonesian National Championships. Mabilaka won their contest by split decision and advanced to the semi-finals of the Light Welterweight class (64 kg).
DKI’s strong national team member boxer Asian Games quarter-finalist Vinky Montolalu was amazing in his opening contest in the Indonesian National Games. He is member of the national team since 2010 and proved different style of boxing than Central Region’s Libertus Gah in the quarter-final of the Light Welterweight class (64 kg). In the same category unknown Panser Pattinama stopped experienced Miftah Rifai Lubis in the first minute of their quarter-final with his lethal punches.
Penang International Tournament silver medallist Sandyarto Deno Feroza competed at the 2014 ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships in Bangkok and his experiences in the continental events delivered for him a place in the last four at the Welterweight class (69 kg). The 19-year-old Youth National Champion talented hope launched powerful punches in his quarter-final bout against Jusmin Hasan and the referee stopped their unequal bout quickly.
Indonesian National Golden Gloves winner and ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships competitor Kusdiyono had to meet in the quarter-final of the Welterweight class (69 kg) with another veteran rival Erico Amanupunyo who competed in several editions of the Southeast Asian Games. The final verdict was split decision in the favour of Kusdiyono who advanced to the semi-finals.
Southeast Asian Games winner veteran Alex Tatontos returned to the world of boxing after a short break and dominated his quarter-final contest against Bram Betaubun in Bandung. In another Middleweight class (75 kg) contest National Golden Gloves Tournament winner Agus Firmansyah had to do his very best to beat Daniel Seum in a spectacular bout.
