The boxing tournament of the Indonesian National Games began with 36 preliminary contests in the city of Bandung which is located in Eastern Jawa and is the country’s main boxing event in 2016. The National Games is holding for both genders and it is also a selection competition for the further international big events in the beginning of the new Tokyo 2020 Olympic era.
After the selection events for the Indonesian National Games 175 boxers can take part in the competition in Bandung. Among them 67 will be women boxers while 31 provinces can send athletes to the Games where Jawa Island has got maximum number of 16 competitors. Maluku, Papua, and Sumatera also have got big delegations in the National Games.
The biggest sensation of the preliminary rounds was delivered by 19-year-old Sunan Agung Amoragaram who is an unknown boxer in the Flyweight class (52 kg). He had to meet with Indonesia’s best boxer Southeast Asian Games winner Julio Bria who is member of the national squad since 2008. In spite of the previous chances the 19-year-old talent was able to control their contest and won the bout by split decision in Bandung.
In the same Men’s Flyweight class (52 kg) Julio Bria’s main rival 22-year-old Aldoms Suguro defeated Agus Gebse winning the bout by unanimous decision. Suguro could be the main gold medal contender of the category after Julio Bria’s elimination in the National Games. Another experienced favourite of the weight class Alberto Alfons also opened his participation with a great success over Randy Ngabalin.
The Women’s Light Flyweight class (48 kg) is the strongest division in the female part of the Indonesian National Games where their veteran boxer Selly Wanimbo started well against Metirina Nenohai winning the contest by unanimous decision. She is member of the national team since 2008 and returned to the world of boxing after a short break.
Beatrichx Suguro is the highest ranked Indonesian woman boxer who is also competing at the Light Flyweight class (48 kg) in the National Games. She tried to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games but those experiences were excellent for the young talent. Suguro was too strong for Warni Halawa who won a few tournaments in Indonesia in the recent years while another national team member boxer Angelina Niis also won her opening bout in Bandung against Evi Sasmita in the same weight class.
Dadan Amanda also returned to the world of boxing and qualified for the Indonesian National Games where his first opponent was a dangerous one at the Bantamweight class (56 kg), Ari Augustian but the experienced boxer was able to solve this tactical contest. A younger talent Atris Neolaka found the best fighting distance quickly against national team member Rafly Langi and did a small surprise with his triumph in the preliminary round.
Farand Papendang competed for Indonesia at the 2015 ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships in Bangkok and he also fought at the 2016 AIBA Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event therefore his success over Ongen Saknosiwi was not a surprise at the Lightweight class (60 kg). Another experienced national team member boxer Kristianus Nong Sedo won his preliminary bout against Ibnu Hibban at the Middleweight class (75 kg).
