The Asian Boxing Confederation is proud of Timor Leste’s strong debut in Astana

Timor Leste is a small country in the Asian continent but their boxers proved their potentials in Kazakhstan’s capital in the previous competition days at the ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships which was a historic step for them.

Timor Leste participated only in the previous editions of the Southeast Asian Games taking a few medals on these occasions and in some of the boxing events of the Asian Games between 1998 and 2018.

Timor Leste’s three U22 boxers were brave in the attacks, they had the stamina to keep the same level until the last gong against more experienced world-class opponents in Astana. All of them lost only by points decisions against Mongolian, Kyrgyz and Kazakh rivals who competed already dozens of international events and the trio reached medals in Astana.

Antonio Nicolau Hau Da Silva is the first ever boxer from Timor Leste who competes in an ASBC Asian Boxing Championships. The 22-year-old Da Silva is their most experienced boxer in this age group and the minimumweight (48kg) talent was highly competitive against Mongolia’s Tuvshinzaya Otgonbayar. Da Silva lost this Round of 16 preliminary contest in Astana but he proved his talent in our sport and he made a history for Timor Leste.

Kyrgyzstan’s Asian Youth silver medallist Bekzat Ergeshov did not underestimate his opponent from Timor Leste, Shevanio Dos Santos Henriques and he landed better shots in the first round. The 19-year-old Kyrgyz used the recent Shopokov Memorial Tournament as his last preparations and he bagged another ASBC medal in his career. Ergeshov’s best round was the second in this bout but the teenage talent from Timor Leste also proved his potential.

Kazakhstan’s defending champion, Nursultan Altynbek stepped into the ring. The 21-year-old promising star met Timor Leste’s Deonizio Dovi Monteiro Ramos and he won their bantamweight (54kg) meeting saving fuel to the next rounds as well. Altynbek became later Asian U22 Champion and he defended his throne in Astana.

The Asian Boxing Family is waiting for the teams from Timor Leste once again in the next championships.
