Thailand’s eight boxers are among the quota favourites in Busto Arsizio

Thailand will compete with three women and five men boxers in the upcoming 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event to Busto Arsizio, Italy with strong quota chances.

Thailand achieved four spots for the Paris Olympics through the Hangzhou Asian Games last September-October and the Southeast Asian boxing power tries to follow their impressive Olympic boxing traditions.

The two-time World Championships bronze medallist Chuthamat Raksat (women’s 50kg), Thananya Somnuek (women’s 60kg), the promising star Janjaem Suwannapheng (women’s 66kg) and the strong Thitisan Panmot (men’s 51kg) have qualified already for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Team Thailand spent the recent weeks in training camps in Uzbekistan and in Spain, furthermore several of their boxers competed at the Strandja Memorial in Sofia and at the Boxam Tournament in La Nucia.

Jutamas Jitpong is aiming for her second Olympic participation after Tokyo and the World Championships silver medallist is among the favourites at the women’s bantamweight (54kg). Another World medallist talent, Preedakamon Tintabthai moved up to the featherweight (57kg) and she replaced Porntip Buapa and Nilawan Techasuep in the national team.

Baison Manikon, the Asian Youth and Asian U22 Champion, qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games at the age of 19 and she wants to repeat that performance once again in Busto Arsizio. She earned a silver medal at the Strandja Memorial Tournament in her last preparation event and the 22-year-old youngster has strong medal hopes in Italy as well.

Sarawut Sukthet had a fantastic junior and youth boxing career between 2017 and 2019 but he suffered several injuries during his early elite years. The 23-year-old Youth Olympic silver medallist has fully recovered and the featherweight (57kg) boxer had an excellent preparation for this event.

Somchay Wongsuwan joined the international competitions in 2014 and his progress was fantastic in this Olympic cycle. The 28-year-old light welterweight (63.5kg) boxer has strong national rivals such as Bunjong Sinsiri and Khunatip Pidnuch, this situation increased his motivation, and he prepared only this event in the recent half year with full speed.

Rattapol Kadamduan is a new face at the light middleweight (71kg), the 21-year-old boxer replaced Peerapat Yeasungnoen this time. Thailand has strong boxers in the heavier weight classes, the World Championships bronze medallist Weerapon Jongjoho (80kg) and the ASBC Asian Champion Jakkapong Yomkhot (92kg) are ready to fulfil these dreams.
