Thailand celebrates Songkran Holiday

Thailand celebrates one of its major holidays, the Songkran or Thai National New Year’s Day, which is beieved to bring prosperity, health and success.

Songkran  is actually on every 13th of April but the celebrations continue until April 15. 

The Thai government extended the festival nationwide to five days to enable people to travel for the holiday.

The word “Songkran” is derived from Sanskrit and it means movement, transformation and an astrological passage. The festival is also celebrated in Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and some parts of Vietnam, India and China.

The Thailand Boxing Association hosted the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament in Phuket a few days before the start of the Songkran festival.
