South Korea sent maximum number of 13 boxers to Italy

South Korea will compete with maximum number of 13 boxers at the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Busto Arsizio, Italy.

South Korea achieved only one bronze medal in the boxing event of the Asian Games and the boxing power did not qualify any boxers for the Paris Olympics yet.

After the Asian Games, the South Koreans arranged a National Selection Tournament and the winners of that competition received the right to participate at the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Italy. The South Koreans spent the previous weeks in training camps together with other strong countries in their homeland.

Jung Joo Hyung surprisingly defeated international boxers in their National Selection and she will compete at the light flyweight (50kg). Im Ae Ji, the 2017 Youth World Champion and the Tokyo Olympian, is aiming for her a quota at the women’s bantamweight (54kg) which is the best category for the 25-year-old boxer.

Jin Hye Jeong competed a few international events in the recent two years and she has to participate in the busy featherweight (57kg) where only two quotas are available in Italy. Oh Yeon Ji is the top star of the national team, the Asian Games winner and the ASBC Asian Champion is one of the quota contenders at the women’s lightweight (60kg).

The women’s welterweight (66kg) boxer will be Seon Su Jin, who joined the national team in 2017 and the Asian Championships silver medallist is a strong attacking athlete. Seong Su Yeon, the 2022 ASBC Asian Championships bronze medallist, will participate at the women’s middleweight (75kg) in Busto Arsizio.

Kim In Kyu achieved a fantastic bronze medal at the Hamburg 2017 World Boxing Championships and the flyweight (51kg) boxer returned to the national events last year to get himself a chance to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

South Korea’s featherweight (57kg) boxer, Shin Jae Yong competed at the 2017 ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships in Puerto Princesa and the 23-year-old boxer had to wait for seven years for his next international competition.

Kim Jin Jea is one of the most experienced boxers in their male squad, the ASBC Asian Championships competitor will be boxing at the light heavyweight (80kg) in Italy. Jung Han Eul was born in 2002 but the heavyweight (92kg) boxer has the experience from some international competitions already during his career.

Kim Do Hyeon returned to the national team following his gold medal at the South Korean National Final Selection Tournament, the veteran super heavyweight (+92kg) boxer replaced Ju Tae Ung in the squad. The Asian Championships competitor Choi Min Su (63.5kg) and Son Seok Jun (71kg) are also included to the team in Italy.
