Shiva Thapa and Amit Panghal won the best finals in the Indian Open International Boxing Tournament

The last two sessions were held in the fifth competition day of the 2nd edition of the Indian Open International Boxing Tournament in the city of Guwahati, Assam where eight women and ten men boxers have been crowned. Shiva Thapa and Amit Panghal defeated their main Indian national rivals in the finals in Guwahati where Mary Kom, Chatchai Butdee and Josie Gabuco also won titles.
The 2nd Indian Open International Boxing Tournament took place for the women’s elite and men’s elite boxers in Guwahati after the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships. The competition supported the boxers to prepare well to the upcoming AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and AIBA Men’s World Boxing Championships.
The city of Guwahati hosted the 2017 edition of the AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships 13 months ago where India earned record number of five gold medals. Guwahati was the host again in a top international competition and Assam region’s biggest city welcomed Asia’s top boxers in the recent days.

Philippines’ Josie Gabuco and Felix Eumir Marcial won gold medals in the Indian Open
Philippines’ AIBA Women’s World Champion and ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Josie Gabuco did not stop her trainings after Bangkok where she became the Best Female Boxer and impressed in Guwahati. Gabuco is in top form this year once again and defeated all of her rivals in the Indian Open International Tournament. The 32-year-old boxer felt the tempo against India’s National Champion Monika and remained unbeaten at the women’s light flyweight (48kg). Philippines’ second gold medal was achieved by Asian Games bronze medallist Eumir Felix Marcial at the men’s middleweight (75kg).

India’s veteran stars as Mary Kom and Sarita Devi Laishram won their titles in Guwahati
India’s six-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte moved up to the flyweight (51kg) and attended at the Open with powerful performance. She eliminated Strandja Memorial Tournament winner Nikhat Zareen in an important semi-final and controlled all of the rounds in the final against India’s experienced Vanlal Duati claiming the title of the event. Her veteran teammate Sarita Devi Laishram was also AIBA Women’s World Champion 13 years ago but in spite of her previous injuries she was able to beat Simranjit Kaur in the final of the lightweight (60kg).

India’s first male gold medal was achieved by Deepak Singh at the light flyweight (49kg)
India’s Deepak Singh claimed silver medal in the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships at the light flyweight (49kg) which showed it was a perfect decision to moved down to the lowest category. The Indian boxer had to meet in the final with Govind Kumar Sahani who attended in the Gee Bee Tournament in Finland this March. Deepak was ruled the middle of the ring and his powerful attacks paid off in their final which means he became India’s first male gold medallist in Guwahati.

Amit Panghal remained on the throne of the men’s flyweight (52kg)
India’s defending Asian Games winner and reigning ASBC Asian Champion Amit Panghal had hard road to the final of the flyweight (52kg) but he was able to beat Lalitha Prasad Polipalli in Guwahati. Amit had to face in the final of the Indian Open International Boxing Tournament with 2016 AIBA Youth World Champion Sachin Siwach Singh who eliminated Philippines’ Asian Games silver medallist Rogen Ladon and India’s Commonwealth Games winner Gaurav Solanki as well. Amit Panghal had to reduce the fighting distance against his tall 19-year-old rival but his energetic style worked well and defeated his younger rival in one of the best fights of the Indian Open.

Thailand’s lone gold medal was achieved by Chatchai Decha Butdee at the men’s bantamweight (56kg)
Thailand’s 2015 ASBC Asian Champion Chatchai Decha Butdee was his strong nation’s lone finalist in the Indian Open International Boxing Tournament. Butdee, who claimed bronze at the Almaty 2013 AIBA World Boxing Championships, will be turning to 34 later this year but he has still the speed to win top fights in the international competitions. He triumphed over Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Gaurav Bidhuri in a fantastic semi-final and triumphed over against another Indian boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht in the final of the bantamweight (56kg).

Shiva Thapa defeated his top national rival Manish Kaushik in the final of the men’s lightweight (60kg)
India’s Manish Kaushik defeated former ASBC Asian Champion and two-time Olympian Shiva Thapa twice in the recent one and half year and claimed silver at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The Indian boxer will be meeting with his main national rival Thapa in the final of the men’s lightweight (60kg) in Guwahati which was one of the most anticipated fights in the Indian Open. Thapa defeated Kaushik in their last meeting at the Indian National Trials on March and he was able to make it once again.
