Shayken makes victorious comeback in Abdusalam Nurmakhanov Tournament

Youth Olympic Games 2018 silver medalist Talgat Shayken produced a sensational performance in his return to the boxing ring to capture a gold medal in the 29th Abdusalam Nurmakhanov Tournament held in Turkestan, Kazakhstan.

The 23-year-old Kazakh standout emerged atop the light middleweight (71kg) class after outclassing countryman and former youth world champion Sabyrzhan Akkalykov.

Two-time ASBC Asian Youth Championships winner Temirlan Mukatayev bagged his first elite title as the 18-year-old pug dominated Shymkent-based talent Zhasulan Omar in the cruiserweight (86kg) final.

Asian Youth Champion Abdigalym Abdikarim had the speed to beat Madiyar Tadzhibayev despite moving up to welterweight (67kg) while Asian junior champ Ruslan Kuzeubayev crushed Almas Nurgali to seize the lightweight (60kg) gold.

Eight more Kazakh standouts ruled their respective divisions as the Central Asian powerhouse took 12 of the 13 gold medals in the international memorial tournament.

Fazliddin Kattakulov delivered the lone gold for Uzbekistan after overwhelming Ardak Sagynbek of Kazakhstan at the featherweight (57kg).

Cambodia, Cuba, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Tajikistan were the other countries that joined the event named in honor of Turkestan’s legendary boxer and coach Mr. Abdusalam Nurmakhanov.

As a boxer, Nurmakhanov was an 11-time Kazakhstan SSR national champion and he achieved four medals in the All-USSR Nationals. He won 222 out of his 239 bouts.

Under his guidance as the national team coach, Kazakhstan claimed one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics courtesy of Kazakh boxing legends Vasiliy Zhirov, Bolat Dzhumadilov, Yermakhan Ibraimov and Bolat Niyazymbetov.
