Seven boxers won the titles at the Nepal National Selection Tournament and all of them received the right to attend at the Thailand Open

Nepal arranged a National Selection Tournament for their elite women and men boxers in seven different weight categories in Lalitpur after their previous activity, the Prakash Dahal Memorial Tournament. The competition was a selection event for the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament which will be held in Phuket on April 1-10.

Nepal’s women boxing is in increasing stage and four of the winners will get their flight tickets to the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament. Their 19-year-old female sensation Sushma Tamang proved her amazing skills and remained unbeaten this year while Sushil Thapa Magar returned with a strong success.

Nepal Boxing hosted national competitions in the early part of 2021 during the most difficult period which proved their strong commitment to boxing. Nepal attended at the Kielce 2021 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships and at the very first time one of their girls advanced to the quarter-finals in Poland.

Nepal not only sent boxers to the Dubai 2021 ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships, but achieved historical medals in this level. The South Asian country sent four boxers to the Belgrade 2021 AIBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships and competed at the Amman 2022 ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships.

Sushma Tamang is Nepal’s biggest talent in our sport, the 19-year-old boxer dominated her final in Lalitpur against Asmita Duwal at the women’s minimumweight (48kg) which was their repeat contest after the Prakash Dahal Memorial Tournament. The women’s bantamweight (54kg) is strong in Nepal and their No.1, Minu Gurung controlled her final against Sanju Maya Thing and selected to the Thailand Open.

Chandrakala Thapa defeated the more experienced Bimala Shrestha two months ago and following that top success, she was able to win her next national event in Lalitpur. The featherweight (57kg) boxer had another hectic final against Hema Rai but she managed to win the contest. Punam Rawal moved from the light welterweight (63kg) down to the lightweight (60kg) but she managed to win her final against Dechen Sherpa.

Sushil Thapa Magar has excellent technical skills and the experienced boxer was enough quick to eliminate AIBA World Boxing Championships competitor Rabin Thapa in the semi-finals of the men’s minimumweight (48kg). Following that success, he was also too smart for Laxman Rai in the final while Mohan Gurung earned only bronze medal this time.

A veteran boxer, Prem Chaudhary earned the title of the bantamweight (54kg) after beating Chandra Thapa Magar and qualified for the Thailand Open. Bhupendra Thapa Magar won the welterweight (67kg) at the Prakash Dahal Memorial Tournament earlier this year and moved down one category to win the selection event against Mausham Rana Magar.
