Sabyrkhan, Khalokov, three others wrap up Asian supremacy in World Championships

Makhmud Sabyrkhan and Abdumalik Khalokov turned their previous silver medals into gold while three more Asian stars grabbed titles in the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships 2023 on the final day of competition in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Kazakhstan’s top seed and ASBC Asian silver medalist Sabyrkhan came up with a dominant 5-0 showing against Uzbekistan’s newcomer Oybek Jurayev to assure himself the bantamweight (54kg) title.

Hometown hero Khalokov, a reigning Asian champion as well as former youth world and Youth Olympic winner, made sure to seize the featherweight (57kg) crown this time, routing Cuban youngster, Saidel Horta, 5-0.

Ruslan Abdullayev, another Asian titleholder from the host nation, went on a strong finish over Mongolian veteran and ex-Asian champ Chinzorig Baatarsukh for a 5-0 triumph in their light welterweight (63.5kg) final.

Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Champion Aslanbek Shymbergenov proved he is at the top of light middleweight (71kg) as he toppled Uzbekistan’s Asian middleweight winner Saidjamshid Jafarov via a 5-0 unanimous decision.

Uzbekistan’s former youth world champion Nurbek Oralbay got his breakthrough in the elite group after beating China’s Tokyo Olympian Tuohetaerbieke Tanglatihan, 4-1, in the light heavyweight (71kg) class.

Russia’s Sharabutdin Atayev and Muslim Gadzhimagomedov nabbed the cruiserweight (86kg) and heavyweight (92kg) titles, respectively.

Host country Uzbekistan emerged atop the medal standings with five golds, two silvers and two bronzes followed by Kazakhstan with four golds and one silver.

Other Asian nations also bagged medals in this year’s Men’s World Championships, as Mongolia came through with one silver and one bronze, China with one silver, India with three bronzes, and Jordan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan with one bronze apiece. Russia took two golds along with four bronzes while Cuba and France achieved one title each.
