Record number of 36 National Federations sent delegations to the ASBC General Assembly which was held in Bangkok on April 2019

Following the elections of the Moscow AIBA Congress and the formation of the new management of the Asian Boxing Confederation, the organization called for its General Assembly which was held in the Grand Fourwings Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand before the start of the ASBC Asian Confederation Elite Boxing Championships.

Record number of 36 delegations attended in the ASBC General Assembly in April 2019. The newly elected ASBC President and AIBA Vice-President Mr. Anas Alotaiba, AIBA Executive Director Mr. Tom Virgets, the President of the Thailand Boxing Association Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira and the ASBC Executive Director Mr. Ali Salameh led the ASBC General Assembly in Bangkok.

On behalf of the Sports & Tourism Minister of Thailand the member of the Culture and Olympic Heritage Commission of the International Olympic Committee Mrs. Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul opened the ASBC General Assembly who welcomed the participants and the special guests. She introduced Thailand’s efforts in all areas of sport and the hospitality of the Land of smiles.

Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira mentioned that the boxing community arrived to a key milestone and the unity of the sport is Thailand’s main message to the continent. ASBC President and AIBA Vice-President Mr. Anas Alotaiba was thankful for the hospitality of Thailand Boxing Association and to host the ASBC General Assembly and the ASBC Asian Confederation Elite Boxing Championships in Bangkok.

The Executive Director of the Asian Boxing Confederation Mr. Ali Salameh led the Roll Call in Bangkok. Following this official point, it was recognized that 36 countries out of the 43 affiliated Asian National Federations attended in the ASBC General Assembly. Almost all of these nations also sent boxers to the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships.

The Hand Over from the previous management was the next part of the ASBC General Assembly. Mr. Ali Salameh informed the participants of the meeting that the previous email address, the access to the ASBC website and Instagram pages were received from the last ASBC management. The financial data as bank statements, assets and liabilities, the National Federations Database and the documents were not received from Kazakhstan.

The approval of new amendments of the ASBC Constitution was the next section of the ASBC General Assembly. According to the newly approved rules the ASBC Executive Committee will consists 16 persons.

The ASBC Competition Calendar was also approved by the participants which contains four continental events in 2019 to cover all age groups. Thailand, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, and Mongolia hosted these ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships in various age groups in 2019.

The approval of the ASBC Budget, the Appointment of the External Auditor and the Open Discussions were the next points of the ASBC General Assembly. Philippines, Pakistan, India, and Jordan were active during the friendly Open Discussions.

China’s Mr. Wu Di, the new AIBA Executive Committee member had a welcome speech before the elections. Mr. Anas Alotaiba informed the participants about the Asian Fund Program to develop the sport and fair chance to all National Federations

AIBA Executive Director Mr. Tom Virgets shared the information with all members that AIBA opened boxing for professionals in 2016 and the rules are still effective. Mr. Virgets introduced the current situation between AIBA and the International Olympic Committee, furthermore its progress. Mr. Virgets mentioned the anti-doping improvements, the financial background, and the Referees & Judging system with its 21 new recommendations.

ASBC President Mr. Anas Alotaiba underlined that AIBA is the only official governing body of Olympic boxing and the ASBC General Assembly approved the statement. The most important part of the ASBC General Assembly the ASBC Elections for the Vice-Presidency and the ASBC Executive Committee memberships was held in the same venue in the afternoon session.

Altogether 36 delegations had the voting rights in the ASBC General Assembly and two National Federations attended there as Observers. All of the zones of the Asian continent sent delegations to the ASBC General Assembly and the participation figure is record in the history of any meetings of the Asian Boxing Confederation.

In accordance to the ASBC Constitution 32.1/B the Asian AIBA EC members were automatically ASBC Executive Committee members: Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira of Thailand, Ms. Shelly Selowati H. Soejono of Indonesia and Mr. Yousuf Ali Al-Kazem of Qatar.

Scrutineers were appointed before the start of the official elections according to the AIBA and ASBC rules. The elections were hold after lunch and 2 ASBC Vice-Presidents and 9 ASBC Executive Committee members have been elected by the voting delegations of the ASBC General Assembly by secret ballots in 11 rounds. China’s Mr. Wu Di and South Korea’s Jae Joon Yoo were elected as new Vice-President of the Asian Boxing Confederation. Mr. Syed Abdul Kadir of Singapore, Mr. Jaber Mohsen of Kuwait, Mr. Sisouphanh Sengsavanh of Laos, Mr. Ali Takleef Shaheed of Iraq, Mr. Edgar Picson of the Philippines, Mr. Jay Kowli of India, Mr. Dian Gomes of Sri Lanka, Mr. Zhusupbek Korgonbai Uulu of Kyrgyzstan and Mr. Saken Polatov of Uzbekistan were elected as ASBC Executive Committee members.
