ASBC Heroes – India’s surprise in Fujairah, Suresh Vishvanath takes the first junior male gold

India’s Suresh Vishvanath claimed the first male gold medal at the Fujairah 2019 ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships making big surprise at the smallest category in the event at the pinweight (46kg). The currently 16-year-old Indian was one of the ASBC Heroes in 2019 with unexpected gold medal in Fujairah.

Suresh Vishvanath was born in the city of Perambur on the 17th of June in 2004 and began boxing at the age of 12. His birth place, Perambur is the neighborhood in the Northern region of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. His coach, V.K. Sharma supports his sessions and Vishvanath tries to prepare to his future goals with 20 hours of intensive training per week.

Suresh Vishvanath moved to Pune to train more professionally and do sparring with India’s best junior talents. His nickname is Vishva and his most influential person is his father who supports his son’s preparations to be a big star in India. As many of the Indian kids, he loves to eat chicken biryani and his hobby is singing.

He attended only a few smaller Indian events but his training attitude convinced the coaches to select him to compete in the Fujairah 2019 ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships. The best Indian junior boxers at the pinweight (46kg) were Ruchir Shrivas, Manish Rathore and Anshul Saroha on paper but the coached decided to take Suresh Vishvanath to the continental event to Fujairah.

The 15-year-old Indian was inexperienced in the international stage but he was confident in his opening bout against Indonesia’s Dio Koebanu who was also born in 2004 as Suresh. The Indian won that fight unanimously and after that he stopped Sri Lanka’s Suraj Thisantha Matharage in the quarter-finals. Suresh Vishvanath collected a big scalp in the semi-finals when he defeated Uzbekistan’s Ikboljon Kudratov winning the bout by split decision.

Suresh Vishvanath had to prepare to his title bout against Philippines’ lone finalist in Fujairah, Eljay Pamisa who defeated the main rivals in the road to the finals of the pinweight (46kg) in Fujairah. The Filipino eliminated Kazakhstan’s Nurkhan Zhylkybay and Thailand’s Thanakon Aonyaem among the favourites while his final opponent India’s Suresh Vishvanath had relatively easier way to the gold medal bout. Both boxers were tired after the previous one week’s top actions but both gave in everything to take the title of the ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships. The final verdict was split decision in the favour of the Indian boxer who won the first gold medal in Fujairah making a surprise in the smallest weight category.
