Prince Mohammad Abbas – Boxing in Jordan is considered a top sport that can achieve high results

Mr. H.R.H. Prince Mohammad Abbas is the President of the Jordan Boxing Association who supports the sport and his name is a guarantee for the success of boxing in the Western Asian country. Jordan has got excellent boxing venue in Amman and besides to their President, Mr. Walid Jarrar and Mr. Azzedine Aggoune are the engines of their successes.
Jordan’s boxing life turned to a new era when their boxer Ihab Al-Matbouli qualified for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Amman hosted the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships in 2013 which was the next big step for Jordan’s boxing. Two of their younger talents qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and Jordan is ready to raise the level of their boxers in the new Tokyo 2020 Olympic era.

– Could you please introduce your country’s boxing life?
– Jordan Boxing Association was established in 1970, and played a great role in establishing the Arab Boxing Federation in 1980. The Jordan Boxing Association is affiliated to ASBC and AIBA since 1975. Since then The Jordanian Boxers have participated in many Boxing Championships and International boxing tournaments
Throughout the last decade, Jordanian Boxers have achieved many outstanding medals, especially at the ASBC championships, and the Jordanian boxers obtained two silver medals and one bronze at the 2013 ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships which was hosted in the capital of Jordan. Also our boxers were able to claim one silver and two bronze medals at the Incheon 2014 Asian Games.
We were represented by two boxers at Seoul Olympic Games 1988, by one boxer at London 2012 Olympic Games, and by two boxers at Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Hussein Iashaish, our big hope at the super heavyweight (+91kg), reached the quarter-finals in Rio de Janeiro and he took medals also in the Asian events.

– Would you like to tell us your strategic plans for the future and the key developments in your country?
– The Prince emphasized that the Jordan Boxing Association will not be only focusing to elite boxers, but working hard to build up competitive youth, junior, and women boxers as well. In addition the Association is working hard to increase the number of national boxing competition to all ages in order to raise the experiences and quality of our boxers.
HRH, pointed out that the Jordan Boxing Association will work hard to spread the sport of boxing in every region of the country and to focus on raising the capacity of boxing clubs, coaches and R&Js as well as a sustainable boxing competitions.

– What are the main strengths and issues in your boxing life?
– Currently, the Jordanian National Boxing Teams are receiving good support from our NOC, as the sport of boxing in Jordan is considered to be one of the sports that can achieve high results for Jordan.
