Phoemsap, other rising stars sparkle in Thailand elite tourney

Youth world champion Atichai Phoemsap and fellow young stars took the spotlight in the Thailand Elite National Championships held at the national training center in Muak Lek.

The 22-year-old Phoemsap, who also snared a gold medal in the Youth Olympic Games following his victory in the AIBA Youth World Championships in 2018, stunned Southeast Asian Games gold winner and his senior Bunjong Sinsiri in the semifinals en route to the men’s welterweight (69kg) title.

Two-time ASBC Asian youth champ Porntip Buapa ruled the women’s lightweight (60kg) class while world silver finisher Jutamas Jitpong and youth world silver winner Nillada Meekoon dominated the bantamweight (54kg) and flyweight (52kg) divisions, respectively.

Tokyo Olympian Baison Manikon topped the women’s middleweight (75kg) even as 19-year-old Thipsatcha Yodwaree earned her first elite title after conquering the minimumweight (48kg).

Nine boxers in each of the men’s and women’s categories were hailed as champions while gaining a chance to represent Thailand in the ASBC Asian Elite Championships 2022 and other upcoming international tournaments.

Top men pugs Thitisan Panmod (fly-51kg), Sarawut Sukthet (feather-57kg), Khunatip Pidnuch (light welter-63.5kg), Peerapat Yeasungnoen (light middle-71kg) and Weerapon Jongjoho (light heavy-80kg) missed the national championships as they competed in the 14th Shokhr Boltekuly Memorial Tournament in Aktau, Kazakhstan.

However, Panmod and company remained in the selection pool for the Asian elite meet set in Amman, Jordan from October 31 to November 13.
