Panmod, fellow Thai stars set to join Shokhr Boltekuly tourney

Former youth world champion Thitisan Panmod will return to action as other top boxers from Thailand are also set to compete in the 14th Shokhr Boltekuly Memorial Tournament on August 29 to September 4 in Aktau, Kazakhstan.

The 21-year-old Panmod, who seized the light flyweight gold medal in the AIBA Youth World Championships 2018, will spring back to the ring after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that forced him to withdraw from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last year.

Youth Olympic Games 2018 silver winner and ex-ASBC Asian youth champ Sarawut Sukthet as well as Southeast Asian Games silver finisher Khunatip Pidnuch are raring to join the tournament organized by the Boxing Federation of the Mangystau Region.

World bronze medalists Weerapon Jongjoho and Peerapat Yeasungnoen will also look to impress in the men’s elite tourney which will serve as a selection and preparation for the upcoming ASBC Asian Elite Championships.

The five pugs were picked by Thai national boxing team head coach Tawan Mungphingklang, who is supported by fellow mentor and retired legendary boxer Chatchai-decha Butdee.

Besides Thailand and host nation Kazakhstan, the other national squads confirmed to participate are Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Mongolia, Morocco, Qatar, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Belarus, Finland, Germany, Malaysia, Moldova, Poland and Turkmenistan are planning to send their bets.

The traditional tilt, named after one of the pioneers of the sweet science in Kazakhstan, will feature all the 13 official men’s elite weight categories.
