Pakistan announced its five-strong team to the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event

Pakistan was announced its five-strong team to the upcoming 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which will be held in Busto Arsizio, Italy from February 29.

Pakistan achieved only one medal in boxing in the Olympic history, still in 1988 and none of their boxers qualified for the Olympics since 2004. The management of the Pakistan Boxing Federation launched several projects to return to the boxing map and qualify at least one boxer to the Games.

The team manager of the Pakistan Boxing Team in Busto Arsizio will be their Secretary General, the ITO Mr. Nasir Tung.

Two female boxers have been selected to participate in the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Italy. Fatima Zahra is one of the most experienced female boxers in Pakistan who will compete at the women’s featherweight (57kg) in Italy.

Laura Akram lives and trains in England but she returned to her family’s roots and for the first time, she will compete for Pakistan. The lightweight (60kg) boxer won a few competitions in England and in Sweden and she is dreaming of the Olympic Games.

Zohaib Rasheed claimed bronze medals at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships and at the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships in 2022, in the same year. The 24-year-old boxer competes at the flyweight (51kg) and he has the best potential for Pakistan in this upcoming World Qualifier.

Muhammad Ibrahim is an Army boxer who claimed gold medal at the recent National Games and he was member of Pakistan’s Asian Games squad as well. The light welterweight (63.5kg) boxer received a second chance to compete in a qualification event.

Pakistan Army’s Azhar Ali won the National Games and the National Championships in 2023 and the decision makers have been selected him for the first time to compete in a major boxing event. The super heavyweight (+92kg) boxer will be making his international debut in Busto Arsizio but he has strong physical skills.
