Mr. Serik Konakbayev appointed as ASBC President one year ago
Kazakhstan’s former star boxer and national icon Mr. Serik Konakbayev was appointed as ASBC President and AIBA Vice-President in Korea one year ago and he celebrates his first anniversary in his new position where he can set into service his financial, economical, political, cooperation and communication skills.
The Vice-President of the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation Mr. Serik Konakbayev became the next President of the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) after Mr. Gofur Rakhimov of Uzbekistan following the official election which was held on 14 November 2014 in the island of Jeju, Korea during the Congress of the International Boxing Association and the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.
As President of the Asian Boxing Confederation he launched new projects and the Asian boxers reached strong performances in the AIBA and ASBC events. The Asian Boxing Confederation’s new slogan “Together we are Power” shows his huge commitment to our beloved combat sport. Mr. Serik Konakbayev is focusing to the boxing tournament of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games to show the strength of the Asian continent.
Mr. Serik Kerimbekovich Konakbayev was born in the city of Pavlodar in the Kazakh USSR on 25 October in 1959 where he began his boxing career in the local club of Spartak. As an active boxer he won the European Boxing Championships twice firstly in Cologne, Germany in 1979 and later in Tampere, Finland in 1981.
Following his triumph over former star boxer and AIBA World Champion Israel Akopkokhyan of Armenia in the final of the 1980 Soviet National Boxing Championships he received the right to compete in the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games in spite of the fact he was only 21-year-old.
Konakbayev advanced to the final of the Light Welterweight class (63.5 kg) at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games where only Italy’s Patrizio Oliva was able to stop him after several victories in the front of the home soil. Konakbayev claimed a further silver medal at the 1982 AIBA World Boxing Championships while he has achieved his last national title in 1984.
He worked as coach of the national team of Republic of Kazakhstan between 1986 and 1990 just before the independence of the Central Asian country. The former boxer was the founder of the Kazakhstan Professional Boxing Federation in 1992 quickly after the independence of the country and appointed as President of this organization in that year which he hold until 2007. Mr. Serik Konakbayev was appointed as Vice-President of the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation in 2007 and he hold this position until 2014.
Mr. Serik Konakbayev graduated as an Engineer in the city of Dzhambul in 1981 and received a degree in the Yassavi Kazakh-Turkish University in 1999. He has finished his PhD studies in Economy in 2006. As a politician he was member of the Mazhilis, which is the official name of the Kazakh Parlament, between 1999 and 2011.
As an actor he was the sailor Bulat and played one of the main role in the famous Soviet action & adventure film “Mystery of Madame Wong” in 1986.
