Mr. Pat Fiacco – The boxers of the Ulaanbaatar ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships will be ready for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Former AIBA Executive Committee member and President of Boxing Canada Mr. Pat Fiacco worked as Observer a the ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. It was his second work in our continent within one month following the Fujairah ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships.

The number of the boxers was 180 from 16 different countries in the ASBC Asian Youth Men and Women Boxing Championships where 20 boxers won gold medals in the Mongolian capital. Mr. Pat Fiacco summarized his experiences and opinions about the event which was one of the last big competitions in 2019.

“The main differences between Fujairah and Ulaanbaatar were the number of the countries which means less boxers competed in the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships. This could be attributed to the fact that it is end of the calendar and fiscal year and the National Federations don’t have any budget left to send their teams to Ulaanbaatar.

The Observer is a new position in the big events and I had to share my focus in the event to cover all official duties. I had to observe all of the scores of the Referees & Judges and also the Evaluators who worked in Ulaanbaatar. I compared the R&Js scores to the Evaluators scores after each round and followed their performances in the sessions.

I was very impressed with the performance of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, India and China during the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships. All of their boxers were very skillful, competitive and arrived to Ulaanbaatar in great shape. Personally I think that it is too soon for these youth boxers to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. However, they will definitely be ready for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The competition venue was a great arena for the athletes to perform at. The branding was well presented, the only complaint was that it was cold in the venue of the championship. I am from Canada and live in the city of Regina, Saskatchewan where we have the same weather. I am used to the cold and winter weather and I felt like I was at home.

The level of the ASBC Asian Youth Men and Women Boxing Championships was very high. All of the attended boxers competed at a high level and have ensured that the Asian Boxing Confederation has a very bright future for boxing in the world.

The Olympic Qualifiers will make up for most of the competitions for the next few months but I won’t be participating on these. I am hoping that the Qualification Events and the actual Olympic Games will not be tarnished with corruption like in 2016. As soon as we know who appointed as ITOs and Referees & Judges, we will know if the Qualification Events and the Olympic Games will run fairly.

I want to compliment the ASBC and the LOC for Organizing a fantastic championship in Ulaanbaatar. It is being many years since the Mongolian Boxing Federation hosted such an important competition and they really tried hard to ensure that the participants were able to perform their duties. A big thank you to ASBC Executive Director Mr. Ali Salameh and the local organizers.

I also want to thank you to Margit Kincses and Tibor Kincses for covering these championships and being so professional as journalists and photographers. They give boxing a positive image in this event as well,” analyzed the Observer of the ASBC Asian Youth Men and Women Boxing Championships, Mr. Pat Fiacco.
