Mr. Deepak Maharjan was named as the Best Coach in Nepal

The Nepal Sports Journalist Forum has announced the top three nominations for the 20th NSSJF Pulsar Sports Awards in four categories.

Nepal’s national trainer, Mr. Deepak Maharjan was named as the Best Coach of the Year 2023 following the decision of the committee. The other candidates for the best coaches trophy were Chandra Gurung in athletics and Jagat Tamata in cricket.

Mr. Deepak Maharjan was Nepal’s last medallist in boxing at the Asian Games, he claimed a bronze at the 2006 edition. As a coach, he supported Nepal’s successes and achievements in the recent one decade but 2023 was very specific in their boxing life.

One of their top female boxers, the Asian U22 Boxing Championships silver medallist Susma Tamang was nominated for the Best Young Athlete of the Year award.

Nepal sent full team to the recent Asian Games for the very first time but the country could not get a medal or Olympic spot for Paris yet. The progress of their delegation size shows the commitment of boxing in Nepal and the country has plenty of young talents.

Their boxers impressed in several other competitions in 2023, firstly Nepal earned a historic silver at the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships in Bangkok. One of their young talents advanced to the quarter-finals at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi for the first time in the event’s history. Nepal is planning to send two boxers to the upcoming 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event to Busto Arsizio, Italy and a bigger delegation to the second and final qualification tournament to Thailand.
