Malaysia rules Penang Pesta international tilt

Host nation Malaysia emerged atop the medal standings in the Penang Pesta International Boxing Tournament held recently in the picturesque island of Penang.

The event was held last time in December 2019 and after three years of hiatus, the competition returned to the boxing schedule. The host Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia shared the gold medals in the Penang Pesta International Tournament.

Current national team star Mohammad Abdul Qaiyum Bin Ariffin spearheaded the hosts’ golden haul as the 21-year-old pug clobbered Krispinus Mariano Wonda, 5-0, in the flyweight (51kg) class.

Another rising talent in Daelonel McDelon Bong beat fellow national standout Jamie Wog Lee Onn, 3-1, in the featherweight (57kg) division.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s young hope Jekri Riwu came up with a sensational showing, winning all his four contests by knockout and RSC in light welterweight (63.5kg), including the final against Singapore’s Alexander Ignatius Coleman.

Mohamed Shahrazi Bin Sepri was the first winner at the Penang Pesta International Tournament following his narrow success over a local talent, Pavithran Rajini Kanth in the final of the minimumweight (48kg).

Mohammed Hanurdeen Bin Hamid represented Singapore already at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and he earned medals in the previous editions of the Southeast Asian Games. The 29-year-old boxer worked well enough in the final against Indonesia’s Rejeki Manalu and earned his next international tournament title.

Singapore’s next generation member, Velvan Tan Jun Jie enjoyed the event in Penang and defeated Helmi Cheng in the final of the welterweight (67kg).

Mohamed Firdaus Bin Azmi moved up to the light heavyweight (80kg) and he celebrated the title in Penang where the experienced Indran Ramakrishnan and Amirul Hafiz were the last gold medallists. Indonesia and Singapore captured two gold medals each in the tourney joined by a total of 72 boxers across 12 weight categories.
