Malaysia Cup was a selection event for the 2017 SEA Games

The boxing competition of the Malaysia Cup was finished in the District of Lawin in Perak where 78 boxers have registered from several parts of the Southeast Asian country. Their top international boxers such as Muhamad Fuad Bin Mohamed Redzuan (49kg) and Khir Akyazlan Bin Azmi (69kg) both won their final contests by large margin of difference.
Malaysia’s best boxer ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Muhamad Fuad Bin Mohamed Redzuan dominated his semi-final at the Light Flyweight class (49 kg) where he was in different level than Faizal Tuan Zulkifli and he had also a quick contest for the gold medal with Syafiq Haziman Bin Abdullah Jefry. Malaysia’s star knocked down his rival and the referee confirmed his TKO success in the first round.
National Golden Gloves winner Jaya Rahman Selvakumar is also member of the national team who competed in several international events in the recent two years. The experienced Flyweight class (52 kg) boxer outscored Mohamed Arif Razuhat in the semi-final and did not give any chance for the gold to Shamsul Karie Nor Mizam who had a successful battle against Muhamad Nor Ilmi Mohamed Zahari in the last four.
Arfiqanie Ahmad Anshori is a young Malaysian talent who was involved to the national elite team in 2015 before his 19th birthday. The Bantamweight class (56 kg) boxer defeated Khairul Azim Bin Nasir winning his semi-final by unanimous decision and did the same performance for the gold medal with Khairul Amar Hakimi while the second bronze medal was achieved by Ezhar Ekmal Zainol.
Mohamed Al-Nazirul Othman joined to the national squad in 2013 and he had also the chance to raise his experiences in the international level in the recent years. He moved up to the Lightweight class (60 kg) and proved his power against Sabah’s Randell Kadayum in the semi-final. The young boxer found the best fighting distance against Mohamed Razif Daud and claimed the gold medal of the Malaysia Cup.
Two-time Malaysian National Games winner Mohamed Khairul Bin Kalai moved down one weight category to the Light Welterweight class (64 kg) in the recent months. The 23-year-old boxer did everything in the Malaysia Cup to win the title and keep his chance to regain his place in the national squad. His attacks shocked Mohamed Saiful Rizal Ahmadudin in the first round and the referee stopped their bout confirming the TKO.
Malaysia’s top international boxer besides to Muhamad Fuad Bin Mohamed Redzuan, 24-year-old Khir Akyazlan Bin Azmi moved up to the Welterweight class (69 kg) this year. The strong boxer, who is member of the national squad since 2009, launched lethal punches in the semi-final against Sabah’s Mohamed Nor Firdaus Fazil and needs took the title against Wan Nur Hafiz Bin Wan Zahalan.
Johor’s National Golden Gloves Tournament silver medallist Mohamed Alieshah Mohamed Kamaruzaman defeated Indran Al Ramakrishna in the semi-final of the Middleweight class (75 kg) which was a narrow fight in the road to the gold medal bouts. Alieshah had to box against National Games winner Samuel Johnson for the gold which was another close bout but he was able to solve that tactical issue.
Wan Mohamed Rizuan Bin Wan Aziz eliminated Johor’s Arif Mohamed Noh and advanced to the final of the Light Heavyweight class (81 kg) where he was able to beat Shamir Naim Johny in the gold medal bout. At the Heavyweight class (91 kg) Mohamed Faizal Omar was too strong for Gilbert Banabas in the final and after his serious punches his opponent injured and the ringside doctor stopped their bout.
The last competition in the Malaysian Boxing Calendar will be the Penang Pesta International Tournament this year which will be held in the last days of December. The Malaysia Boxing Cup is a selection event for the 2017 Southeast Asian Games which is scheduled in Kuala Lumpur next August.
